Do I need 3 GPUs to have a good SLI setup?

Hello all, I'm new here!
I'm looking to SLI Two GTX Titans in the future to comfortably play games in 2560x1440 res. but there is one problem. Certain people are telling me I'll need 3 Titans to receive satisfying benefits from SLI.
They are saying SLI is a rip-off unless I get 3 GPUs, so that I won't have micro-studdering issues and that sort of stuff.

I'm considering purchasing the ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe Mini ITX Intel Motherboard and I'll put my EVGA GTX Titan in it and call it a build. But that would limit me and i'll never have an upgrade path, I'll be stuck with 1 GTX Titan.

I could easily get the ASUS P8Z77-V PRO but It'll be a big motherboard and I'm not good with computers.
I know a mini ITX board wouldn't be a good idea considering I have a Mid-tower NZXT Phantom 410 case.
So here are my questions. Is two GTX Titans worth it for gaming in 1440p? Is 2-way SLI even worth it?
Also, I really want the small motherboard :)

Thanks in advance!

Well I can tell you that I have no problems at all running my 3 Asus 27" monitors at 5760x1080 Surround on just 2 GTX 670's in SLI so I do not think you would need more than one Titan if that is what you want in a GPU. I am able to play every game I have ultra/max settings with no performance drop what so ever.

From what I understand the performance benefit of SLI starts to drop off beyond two cards but I do not know if that holds true with the Titan cards.

"Certain people...." are idiots. Telling you you need to spend $3000 on video cards to have "satisfying benefits" is worse than silly.

Especially considering "...and I'm not good with computers"
I'm not going to tell you what to get, but 3 x Titans is not it.

How is it a problem that I'm not good with computers?
This is my first build and I want to give PC gaming a try.
I just hope two GTX Titans will not perform poorly.

Sounds like someone is pulling your chain. For instance,

You: Spending $2000 on graphics cards is worth it to play games.
Smart@ss friend: Why not $3000?

Finally, if you're not good with computers, don't even get one GTX Titan. Go to someone you trust who is good with computers, explain what you are trying to accomplish with the build and have them help you make the decisions before you make a misstep that would cost you more money than the original purchase.

If you're just starting out, and listening to people who are telling you that you need 3 Titans (or even 2) to be able to game...That's just wrong.
That is like telling a new driver that they need a Ferrari to have a satisfying driving experience.

All right I think I'll go ahead and buy the standard sized motherboard and buy one more titan in the future for 2-way SLI. I'm glad you cleared that up because I thought 2-way was bad listening to them.

It's going to cost me a lot of money.
I'll be gaming in 1440p so I'm worried one Titan isn't going to be powerful enough.

Even at that who ever told you that you would need 3 Titan GPU's would be completely wrong and you should not take anything they have to say if that is the advice they are giving you.
