Hello tom's hardware members. I am new to the community and this is going to be my first question and it's going to be quite long. So bear with me :D

I have searched extensively on this forum and have found similar topics but I am sure my situation is different and more specific. On to the question, I am about to enter college this fall and I am looking to build a gaming rig. I have researched extensively and have finalized my build. However I have some questions regarding 3D.

I plan to install AMD graphics and I am not willing to change this as I will be using my rig for compute related tasks too such as Bitcoin mining. If you know about bitcoin mining you will know that AMD GPU are preferred over NVIDIA. I know very well that NVIDIA is the way to go for 3D gaming but it is really not an option for me so please don not post "Get NVIDIA" as solutions to my problem :p

I am aware of AMD HD3D certified monitors that are available such as the Samsung 750, 950 etc. However, the reviews have led me to believe that the contrasts and picture quality and the brightness are not that great. That is a let down as I am going to be doing 3D only occasionally and I need a good quality 2D monitor. Other monitors compatible with HD3D seem to perform even worse than the Samsung ones.

So I have the ASUS VG248QE monitor in mind: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
It is Nvidia 3D Vision ready and also has really great specs for 2D gaming.

Now my question is, can I get 3D to work with this monitor on an AMD card? I am aware that AMD uses Display Port for 3D while Nvidia usually uses DVI-D or HDMI. However, if you scroll down on the overview section on the newegg site, it says that the monitor supports 3D Vision via DVI-D and Display Port. So could I use AMD HD3D with this monitor using middleware software like TriDef or something?

I have read many a times that users have been able to play in 3D on AMD cards using 3d vision monitors using the HDMI cable. However they are capped at 1080p@24Hz. However it seems that Display Port can work with this monitor? Also, I would like to know how exactly did they make it work irrespective of HDMI or DisplayPort. As far as I know, the 3D Vision kit requires Nvidia drivers and GPU. Then how did many gamers including many from this site report that they were able to use the 3D Vision glasses with AMD albeit in HDMI mode? Wouldn't the glasses require Nvidia software? If not can someone who have set up 3d Vision glasses with AMD give me a short tutorial on how to do it?

I think a user called @bystander from this forum have done this thing. If you are reading this could you help me out with this?

If I can't get 3D Vision to work with AMD, can I get 3rd party active shutter glasses to work with the monitor with a compatible IR or RF emitter?

And if in fact the monitor requires DVI-D and the Display Port info was a typo, is it possible to override this by using an active display port to DVI converter?

Thanks for the patience to read through the whole thing :)

From what I understand, AMD's 3D is passive just like at the movie theater. It should work without any issue. You'd have to get the passive glasses though. Fortunately, they are far cheaper than active glasses.

I really don't know how companies thought they would have success selling active glasses at $150 a pop to a family ($600???) so they can watch their 3D blu-ray movies, when passive 3D content at the movie theater is just as good. This is one mistake many TV manufacturers and Nvidia have made when it comes to 3D.

Do you also know bitcoin mining is nearly depleted, the odds of finding anything on your own regardless of GPU are nearly infinity and bitcoins just fell 1/4 of their value. How much energy is wasted to maybe find one coin's worth nowadays probably is more than the coin is worth.

As for 3D, no idea.

AMD's 3D is independent of implementation and depends on the manufacturer of monitors. They can be either passive or active or glasses free 3D or any type of 3D as long as the manufacturer incorporates AMD HD3D with their monitors.

I am not opting for passive 3D due to the notable decrease in vertical resolution in 3D.

Bitcoins won't be depleted until the year 2022 or something as far as I have read. Its value definitely fluctuates but it still stands at a fairly reasonable level. Besides, I won't be mining on my own. I am already mining with a pool but withcrappy old hardware but I have still made quite a reasonable amount.

I need this question answered as well, I have an Asus VV248 and it says 3D vision ready on the sticker but I have an AMD card. If I go buy the 3D Vision 2 kit. Will it work on my AMD card ?

The 3D Vision kit is Nvidia proprietary tech and will not work with the AMD card.

3D Vision is Nvidia Proprietary. So it won't work with AMD cards if you bought the 3D Vision separately. You have two options:-
1. Buy a 3D Vision monitor which comes with a transmitter built in and supports HDMI 3D. There's an Acer monitor which does this but I do not remember which model.
2. Read my extensive 3d setup guide for AMD monitors here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1661978/ultimate-g... This will give you the best experience and I have tested it.

APPARANTLY; (And I am currently in a similar situation (I have the Asus VG278H kit with Crossfire HD7770`s)

the TO-BE-RELEASED AMD R9 290X will have full 3D support for active shutter glasses using the New HDMI 2.0.

I read it on a Tech site somewhere a week ago. I am in-part waiting for it. If not, I get the GTX780 Asus.

It wont, it just means it uses the new HDMI standard, nothing to do with supporting 3D.

But you will need a monitor which supports HDMI 2.0

Thats one of the things I am waiting to find out.

I could already run stereoscopic 3D via HDMI using the AMD cards I have already (using propriety [costly] software [but at 24Hz]).

Also..the Monitor already works wonderfully in 3D via HDMI from a PS3.....
...so it doesnt seem too much of a stretch to assume it will work with the new cards at full throttle; perhaps some new chip has been developed and stuck on the board (something like like a PAL to NTSC converter I have so I can watch UK PAL DVD`s on an NTSC-only TV)?

Using whatever technique that someone came up with.

Not being an electronic engineer, I don`t know why HDMI 2.0 would have to be in the monitor rather than just on the card output and converted to work in stereoscopic at full Hz/framerate, I couldn`t say for sure if its a monitor issue that will stop it working properly.

Like I say; its amazing what people think up.

Did you say a new version of Tridef?

Is there a reason you resurrected an old thread to talk about a new feature that you "think" may help you do something related to this thread? You should start a new thread of your for this discussion.

And as others have mentioned, the monitor has to support 3D through HDMI for any 3D to work, and even if that does, it has to support 3D with the new HDMI standards to allow 1080p@60hz.

Your console only looks good in 3D because most consoles play games run at 30 FPS already, so they just limit you to 30hz in 3D. With a mouse, and up close to a screen, that is not good enough for PC's.

This is the title of the thread;

"Using 3D with an AMD card on a 3D Vision ready monitor"

...and I dont see a SOLVED icon anywhere. Maybe I overlooked it?
Could you put a link to it?

I don`t even see an icon saying this is an old thread; and responses have to be limited to stock-market speeds of interest..

And I gave up mind-reading years ago.

This is a thread for a specific users problem. It creates confusion when two people are asking for help on the same thread.

You can tell this is from back in April and May be looking at the date of the posts.
