Prevent idling to 2D clocks?

I'm using a XFX HD7870 for bitcoin mining. This runs the GPU at 99% of capacity. The problem is, after a seemingly random amount of time, the card will idle down to 2D clocks. If I stop/restart the miner, the card speeds up again. I want to prevent the idling in the first place.
I've checked all power settings. After some Googling, I forced AA on in the drivers, have left GPU-Z and/or Afterburning running, to no definite effect.
I'd like to know if there's a surefire way to prevent the card from idling.
One possibility is a connection issue with the bitcoin miner, which I am investigating concurrently; making sure the card is getting work.

Hi I have also noticed this problem on my 7850. In order to fix the idling down to 2d clocks you have to change the actual 2d clocks. What you do is open msi afterburner and open up the setting tab in the bottom middle part of the program. You then use the small arrows in the top right of the settings to move through the menus. Go all the way to the right until you see the profiles page. On this page you can set the 3d and 2d clocks with an assigned profile. Simply save your current clocks to profiles 1 and 2 to keep the 3d and 2d clocks the same. This worked for me and I wish you good luck :)
