Basically I've just finished my first build and need to decide what to do as far as a display goes...

System:

i5 3570k (not overclocked yet)
Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H
8Gb 1600mhz ram
Gigabyte GTX 670 OC windforce x3 2Gb
blah blah blah

So will my single GTX 670 run battlefield 3 and alike well (60FPS) on high/ultra settings on 3 24" monitors and will it do well with coming games such as BF4? Or will i need to cut back monitors or sli

A single 670 isn't going to push 5760x1080 by itself. Get two 670s in SLI and you'll almost be to your 60fps goal:

You can always scale back the AA or turn a detail down here or there though...

Personally, I would start with a single 670 and a 144Hz 3D-capable monitor and run at 1080p at 144Hz in 2D:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313&Tpk=asus%20144Hz&IsVirtualParent=1

This will drastically reduce tearing. You'll thank me for this advice and never go back to 60Hz monitors again; especially because you like shooters. These monitors have among the highest 2D refresh rates out there and a 1ms response time.

Then, At some point, get a second 670 in SLI and after that think about adding another two monitors.

Basically the easiest way to explain it is store credit with an expiry date. only have one monitor id buy its either that or buy stuff, sell it and buy a different monitor. Obviously ill lose a bit of money but im not too bothered as its essentially free anyway.

I can push 3 monitors on a 7870 with lowered settings so I thing you really should be fine. All depends on the fps and settings that you want. Also, 2 monitor gaming SUCKS, believe me, you don't want to try playing an fps like that.

Good point on FPS with two monitors, however wouldn't three 24ich even if you can push it be a big much depending on how you sit from your PC ? I mean if your playing FSX or a driving game then you would turn your head to look to the left and right but with three 24inch I could see your neck hurting after long session.

The racing games I really like because the real idea behind 3 monitors is to only provide you with brief peripheral vision. I like it because it makes it seem like you actually are racing a car. You usually don't constantly turn your head, but you usually see out of the corner of your eyes and this will help a lot in many games. I say go for the three monitors and see how you card runs it. I can run 5 monitors off my 7870 in tf2 and it looks crazy.
