Purchase date: ASAP, within the next few wekks or so.
Basic usage: no gaming. Probably most demanding use is HD movies.
Current GPU and power: New in 2010 - PNY 9600GT 512mb PCI express x16 slot, probably ver 1.0. Upgraded to 450 W PS when I bought the PNY card.

System was working fine until scary noises occurred. First thought was HD but a closer look revealed cooling fan making death rattle noises.

Best case is replacing the fan. I haven't disassembled it yet to see how generic the fan is.
Next choice is to replace graphics card.

Gateway model DX4831, MB H57M01, 6GB ram.
Current setup was card feeding Samsung 1680 x 1050 monitor and flat screen tv. Third monitor desk display is Arkview USB to DVI adapter to an antique Sony 1280 x 1024 flat screen. (USB makes adequate display for email, text, etc, but speed is not suitable for anything more demanding.)

Newegg or Amazon are preferred vendors, but I won't turn my nose up at a good ebay deal. Brand is not important, but I prefer well known reliable ones.
Price: Hopefully below $100. I saw some used PNYs on ebay for $20 to $50 .
Current card is three years old, so if newer is better, I'll go for it.

No overclocking.

My main question: I see some PCIe ver 2.0 cards. The big question is are 2.0 cards compatible with my 1.0 PCIe, and if compatible, will they actually work on my slower hardware?
In Tampa FL, USA.

If all you're doing is watching HD movies and not gaming then you can literally buy the cheapest PCI-E card available at your local store and youll be fine. All dedicated cards will be the same in this area.

And PCI-E 2.0 should be backwards compatible with 1.0
