What do you folks think?

Should I buy an external hard drive or build one with an external enclosure?

I'm looking for reliability and a decent read/write rate.

Thank you,
Rod

I would build.
You don't always get a normal drive when you buy a usb hdd. Sometimes you get a firmware restricted drive that won't work well if installed into a computer or worse, you get a drive that has the usb bridge build into it instead of the enclosure...
The other benefit of building your own is you get to control the quality of the parts. Grab a good enclosure and a WD Black, Red, or RE drive and you should be set for a long while as long as you dont mistreat it.

They are exactly the same. A standard 3.5 or 2.5" hard drive in a USB connected case.
Either buy an external, or buy the HD and an empty case. The critical part, the drive, will be exactly the same.

It makes no difference.

If you need an external drive the things that you need to be aware of are the connections types (USB 2/ USB 3/ eSATA/ FireWire)
Then make sure that you have the proper connection(s) available.

example: I bought recently a 2.5 external case that uses no power cord, I was not aware that it uses 2 USB connections to power the drive instead.
Thankfully I do have that extra USB connection available.

I prefer getting an enclosure and drive seperately. Some of the retail pre-built external's warranty is void if you have to crack the case. Considering how many posts there are regarding people having issues with their external drives, I feel safer knowing I won't be voiding any warranties if I need to remove the drive from the enclosure.
