Over the past few weeks, I keep getting the same error, something to do with my Nvidia drivers. Under system logs, it comes up as this;

The description for Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

\Device\Video7
00b2(21e8) 00000000 00000000

I've completely removed all drivers and reinstalled the latest ones and that didn't seem to help. This has caused my entire computer to lag for about 30 seconds, then either freeze or back to normal saying the nvidida driver has crashed and has successfully recovered, restart after the computer locks up for a couple seconds, and I have received one BSOD from this, but it went away so fast I couldn't read it, and it was a couple weeks ago.

I don't know what else to do. I've checked all the settings in my bios, updated and reinstalled drivers, etc. If anyone can help, that would be awesome. I hate that the first pc I built is having a problem like this.

When I get to the command prompt part of that, where it should be creating a new .sys folder on my desktop, it just creates nvlddmkm.sy, and says "Can't open input file: nvlddmkm.sys

Any idea why?

Hate to bump an old thread but I'm having the same issues as the OP, wondering if you've got an update? Getting the same nvlddmkm followed by the same symptoms, system freezes - sometimes comes back, sometimes it requires a hard reboot. Seems to happen randomly.

I'm also going to bump this. I'm getting the same error in the system logs and the same symptoms as the OP and the above poster.

I'm also getting the same problem when using that ehow guide. When I do step 8 on that guide, it merely makes "nvlddmkm.sy" on my desktop and says "Can't open input file: nvlddmkm.sys"

I've been having these symptoms for months now and I've tried a great many things to try and alleviate my problem to no avail. This is another avenue of hope, but I need the same help with the guide as the OP and hellofrommycubicle.

Hey man, so I did a couple of things and the issues *seem* to have gone away, but I haven't been using the computer much the last few days so it could be coincidence. I re-seated the GPUs, cleaned the pci connectors with rubbing alcohol, and used compressed air to blow out the pci slots. I also uninstalled my AVG antivirus, which I think may have been the issue. It was a copy I got from a less than reliable source, so I had no problem uninstalling it. Give that a shot, but so far I've logged maybe four hours using the computer and not one crash yet. About an hour of heavy duty gaming (metro 2033)

Hi hellofrommycubicle. I do have AVG, but I've uninstalled it before and still had the same problems. I've re-seated my GPU and blown out all the dust I could from the pci slots (did not rub the pci connectors with rubbing alcohol, though) to no effect. Sometimes I'll be able to play games for several hours on end without issue, but the problems will show up again in another session (sometimes immediately after logging in, or after some hours of use).

Have you still been without any problems since you did what you did?

I've noticed this 'Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm' in the Event Viewer around every time my PC begins having troubles. My graphics card is still under warranty, so I'm wondering if I have it replaced, will this error go away?

I have not had any additional problems, no, but like I said I have only probably put a few hours into the system since doing the above mentioned things. Though, I was getting fairly frequent crashes. I'll keep updating this. Are you SLI'ing?

No, I only have a single EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti FPB.

Well, I'll add myself to this thread unfortunately :heink:

I finished a new build about a week and a half ago. A week after completion, I BSOD during a game on steam (and almost had a heart attack, as this is my first build). Ofcourse, when I crashed, I didn't get a correct read on the Nvlddmkm Error. I had a "critical" error - bug check code 124.

So I initially run a WhoCrashed here test, which suggested a hardware problem. I ran Memtest overnight (12hrs) followed by a BIOS update, followed by Prime95 overnight the next night (13hrs). Everything checked out, so I was under the assumption that I was in the clear.

Tonight I hop into a game of Crysis2, and it freezes when a barrel explodes in my face- so I ctrl/alt/del and end task. I hop in again (ran well for about 30min), and when I go to leave game, the screen blanked for a few seconds and the program stopped responding. I ended it w/ task manager and had a look at my log...low and behold, there sat the Nvlddmkm Error.

So I'm telling myself that this was probably the hardware that threw my BSOD a few days back. Would it be a reasonable assumption? Could my BIOS update be handling the error better, so I'm not receiving BSOD now, but the error message and some bad behavior instead?

Like I said, this is a new build...I believe I could exchange my GPU (or any component for that matter), but is this a graphics card hardware issue or a software issue?

This link above seems useful...but it's an old article. I am a little hesitant to start digging into my registry. The one thing I may do is clean my drivers and reinstall...there is the beta driver for Nvidia that I haven't run yet.

Any breakthroughs from you other fellas? This is not what I thought I was getting into when I decided to build this thing...

It would be a good first step. Again, I was running a less than kosher version of AVG, after uninstalling that and re-seating my GPUs everything seems to be okay. Though I still have not gamed extensively, but i've put in a couple hours with no crashes. Are you able to move the GPU to a new PCI slot?

I have the feeling I could potentially work things out if I waste my life away trying to troubleshoot this thing, but i decided to nip it in the arss and RMA the thing with newegg before time runs out. I'm going to uninstall all my drivers tonight, box the thing up, and order a Radeon 7970. It's dissapointing, as I was really impressed with the card when it was working. But I didn't buy this computer to spend my weekends troubleshooting driver errors. Here's to hoping the AMD drivers will be more compatible with my setup...

Some times the issues is not with the card or the driver but it is not compatible with the application or game that you are playing. It may not have been tested thorougly. Replacing card is not the answer but some times it is best to check the with game vendors about any known issues. Hope this helps.
