Upgrading my cpu

Okay so I was wondering what is the best cpu I could get for my computer. I did some research and thought I could fit a AMD Phenom II X4 970 cpu but it only would run at 800mhz so I assume it was something to do with my mobo not being compatible.

my current specs are
CPU - AMD Phenom X4 9550
Mobo - Biostar TA790GX A2+
Memory - 8192 MB
and my GPU is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti

so if anyone could help out I would greatly appreciate it.

there is no good upgrade with that mobo.you need new mobo to get better cpu

The best you can do is an AM2+ Phenom II x4 940/945, which is something you would have to buy used. Otherwise, new board and CPU time. Do you have a microcenter nearby?

nearest micro center is like an hour and a half away. thought about getting a new board but wouldn't i need to get a cpu and new ram?

It is where I got my 3570k and Z77 extreme4 combo.

Yes, you would have to get new cpu and ram as well. Their FX 8320 combo with the Asrock 970 extreme4 is pretty good. Paired with a decent cooler and ram, would make for a nice setup. They have nice 3570k combos also.
