I have an HP Compaq NC6400 business laptop (Intel CPU - T2400... 1.83 GHz) that runs for a little while, then freezes. Display is still on and showing what it was at the time of the freeze, but cannot do anything with it except hold the power button to turn it off.
I'm running Win XP SP3, but it also freezes running memtest from a USB (UBCD4WIN USB).
It is not overheating, which was the first thing I looked at. I have blown out the CPU cooling fan and heat sink.
Had recently (6 weeks ago) replaced memory, increasing physical mem to 3 GB. Have restored memory to old config of 1.5 GB. Have tried several configurations with no perceivable change. Currently have a single 2GB SODIMM installed in bay under keyboard (externally accessible bay empty).
In running memtest MANY times over the past week+, only once did it call out an error on pass 5, otherwise it's been happy with the memory until it froze on passes up to 9.
Have run several disk-checking programs. On one execution, one of those declared a read-error on HDD, but other executions and other software (including SMART) show no issues. To eliminate the HDD, it is now out of the system and sitting on the desk.
Other posts have suggested the power jack or power supply. I've switched power supplies, run it on battery, run with just the power supply and no battery, "wiggled" the power cord at the connection, removed the power cord after the freeze, added the power cord after the freeze... no change in behavior.
I DID have a battery go bad in this laptop a week ago. It is SO dead that none of my laptops will recognize that it is installed. I've tried it in 3 different NC6400's.
While writing this, I had the system on the BIOS System Information screen... and it froze up there.
I know that the older sister to the NC6400 (the HP NC6000) has an issue with freezing when the the solder joints on MAX1987 power chip crack. Does anyone know if this laptop has a similar issue?
I have not lost any setting in ROM, so I have not suspected the CMOS battery... should I?
Other suggestions?
Thanks,
Dan
