I own a dell d620 lattitude and recently a i have been facing some weird lagging issues. My laptop boots up fine and everything works fine until i start playing games (red alert 2, warcraft, halo), at which point about almost 15 mins into the game my whole laptop gets really laggy. The game becomes unplayable and the whole system slows down considerably. Also in the task manager the cpu usage jumps to 100% by even simple web browsing. I thought it was due to viruses and malware but antivirus scans, formatting the whole hard drive and installing a fresh copy of windows didnt solve the issue.

Your laptop is over heating and the GPU/CPU reduce performance automatically to try and get rid of some of the heat. Laptops are not meant for gaming and especially not an older Dell latitude like the one you have. There have been some issues that were recalled on your model with graphic chip failures from temperature fluctuations. It is very common for laptops to overheat especially the ones from a few years ago. Go to this link and click on your model at the top and you will see the issues with it.

I installed a temperature measuring software which shows that the temperature of the GPU stays around 45C (no fluctuations), whereas the CPU temperature stays at 52C but goes as high as 76-79C. Can that be considered as overheating? I read somewhere online that overheating issues occur aound 90C. I used to play doom3 on high graphics on this thing and it used to work fine. Now it lags on Red Alert 2 :p Isn't there a fix for this overheating issue?? (other than blowing out the dust from the fan, already did that, the fan's clean)

Temperature measuring software is not always accurate and 79C is a bit high anyway. If your computer has a Nvidia graphics chip then you might be able to get it fixed for free because there was a recall. It explains on the link I posted and has a list of exact models. You can buy a laptop cooler online which might help. Just make sure you get the right size or one that's made for your laptop
