Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron (dell tag flk9sl1) and it had 1 2gb ddr 3 chip in it. I bought 3 additional 2gb ddr3 chips from new egg and went to install them. They worked with 8gb for a bit, then the computer crashed. When I would boot up, no beeps or anything, but no video either.

Finally I got different RAM different brand etc, and the same thing happens. Slots 1 and 3 work fine, but if I put anything in 2 or 4, again, no beeps as in bad memory, but the computer seems to boot up fine as if I let it boot up then kill the power, the next time I get a windows did not start correctly error.

I've updated the bios to the latest on the website, any ideas? thanks!

Using only the original DIMM did you try it in each memory socket to see if each socket works?

Using only one of the new DIMMs try it in each memory socket to see if each socket works.

If all memory sockets work with one DIMM then use a pair of new DIMMs placed in the DIMM3 and DIMM4 sockets. This pair of memory sockets are located at the end of the memory bus and should be filled first.

Have you cleared the CMOS using the CLR_CMOS jumper?

When you placed the original DIMM in the DIMM4 socket did the system fail the POST (Power On Self Test)?

If only DIMM1 and DIMM3 are working then that means the memory sockets on one of the memory channels is defective.

The dual channel memory controller, itself, is on the CPU.

I would try taking out the CPU and checking the CPU's socket and pins for any anomalies. Remount the CPU with new thermal paste after cleaning the old stuff off. Try troubleshooting again to see if you get any further.

A few questions to OP (original poster). What models of RAM you purchased, exactly? Dell guaranteed to work with Crucial, I have Inspiron 570 with Corsair, a lot of fancy RAM have problems with Dell, use regular speed 9-9-9- RAM, not something like 7-7-7- type. Regarding RAM size, I have 2x4GB configuration, maximum memory can go up to 16GB, tested by users. Use matching pairs of RAM only, Dell as you noticed is very sensitive here.
To reset CMOS - turn off your Dell, unplug all cables, press and hold power button for about 20 sec, open side panel, ground yourself by touching metal case parts, look for shinny object, quarter size, this is CMOS battery, pay attention which side is up, remove it, and let it be off for at least 1 hour (some recommend overnight), install back in, put everything back, reboot, don't forget the BIOS time setup.
Do above procedure with original Dell memory chip in original slot.
Before advising next steps I need to know your new RAM exact model.
