GTX660 Throttling Issues

In the last few days, as I am playing games specifically, TERA and DotA2, within five to ten minutes of playing, my screen will flash black then return and the framerate of the game drops significantly.

After doing some research and monitoring my GPU temps, it appears this is where the problems lies. I am attributing the screen flash and the framerate drop to the cards throttling marks. As I have had the card for several months now and the problem just occurred this week, I would like to try and fix it myself rather than get it exchanged but I am at a loss as to how to fix it. Could it be a driver issue?

Relevant information:
- 600w psu
- Zalman z5 case (extremely clean inside)
- 45-50c gpu idle temp (throttles around 80c and reaches this temp from idle in 5-10 mins.)
- I have tried removing the side panel and placing a fan directly by the gpu and it still increases the temp at the same rate
- Even reducing the gfx settings within each game does not reduce the temp increase rate.

Thanks for any help that can be offered.

I actually changed the PCIe slot that houses the card and cleaned it out prior to posting. There was very little dust.

A 20" box fan.
