AMD confusion help

Looking to upgrade my motherboard but am confused about the differences and hoping you guys can help me understand.

details:

Chip: AMD Phenom 9950 Quad core 2.6

Current mb: Asus M3A78-T

Main question is - Do AMD chips all fits the various 2's, 2+'s, 3+'s and Fx?

Thanks for your quick response!

This pc was built in late 2008 and has been sitting for 2+ years collecting dust but had to pull it out after my laptop went for a swim. Had a few issues trying to get it going again as it kept freezing up while in bios setup, figured it needs to be updated.

pulling the cmos battery out then replacing it seems to have solved the issues for now.

Very limited knowledge with pc building.
