Hello all, I recently built my PC back in February using a MSI Radeon R7770. My machine has worked great since. However, I have a significant amount of Coil Whine coming out of my monitor speakers, and headphones plugged directly into the front panel. I can also hear it from the GPU itself, same exact whine. I know it has to be the GPU since it mainly only occurs when my PC requires output from the GPU (Such as when I'm playing video games) Also, it happens slightly when I'm using an internet browser and changing windows, scrolling, etc. Its hooked up to an ATX 630 SS Power Supply and mounted in a Biostar TA990FXE Motherboard. I also contacted MSI directly but of course, they were unhelpful and don't want to ship out a replacement. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

A user last week claimed to make his "coil whine" disappear by going into Windows and changing the power setting. Give it a try.... Not calling this a fix but it may help you narrow down the issue.

I have had this issue on many PC builds, it may not be your video card, so much as the fan's attached to it throwing out EMF causing your analog cable to pick up the whine.

From personal experience, I have found that using either a digital output (HDMI/Optical) or properly RF shielded analog cables removes this. You can also test this by using USB headphones.

I haven't tried that one yet. It seems like an ideal solution if I can find another monitor to try it out on. I'm using an older one so there's no HDMI outlet but I'm sure I can find one somewhere. I'll post my findings.

By "Older" you wouldn't be using a CRT would you? If the CRT is emitting a whine, you can usually resolve that by modifying your refresh rate up to 70.

Having said all of this, these are all "easy" fixes, and the whine could certainly be caused by your GPU. Resolutions for this usually involve replacing the GPU or Power supply

Could also be a PSU with poor output filtering.

Its an older LCD. And I really don't think its the PSU. The sound isn't coming from there.

A poorly filter PSU can let ripple into other rails.

This is the power supply you currently have if I am not mistaken.

What Smeeze is saying is that even though the whine is coming from your video card, it could be caused by a voltage ripple in your power supply, which could be true but is not likely as the 7770 (if i'm not mistaken) doesn't use an additional power cable. The voltage requirements for a 7770 are at the peak limit of what PCIE can transfer without additional power, which would put the motherboard at fault more likely than the power supply in my opinion.

If the biggest issue is coil whine across your speakers/headphones a digital cable should resolve it. If coil whine from the GPU itself is bothersome then replacing the GPU may be your only option.

If you do go the replacement route, I recommend finding one with an additional power connector.

Raidmax PSUs are crap. And the 7770 does have a PSU connector.

Smeezekitty, while you are correct the 7770 uses an additional power cable (I was thinking of the 7750), if the only comments you can make are 1 liner's repeating what has already been said, insulting this guys hardware or trolling me, then please do everyone and favor and delete your posts.

I strongly suggest you look into the quality of raidmax supplies.
And I will NOT delete my posts. But I will not post any more on this thread since arguing is pointless.

Ive looked everywhere on the net to find a solution for making my coil whine on my R7950 disappear and I havn't even thought of changing the power plan settings in windows 7.

I changed the plan settings and now the coil whine is completely gone.

thanks for the advice !!

Cheers
