Other:
When using an Intel setup, there's usually an "XMP" profile setting that checks your RAM and CPU then automatically applies the optimal settings.
So:
1) CPU/RAM profile setting (read about SPD; Serial Presence Detect)
2) CPU settings (Turbo, Power Savings, Overclocking)
3) SATA to AHCI (usually)
4) update BIOS firmware
5) enabling FAN CONTROL (CPU, case)
Those are the main ones off the top of my head, but as mentioned it's a great idea to read your motherboard manual.
Minor points:
1) overclocking the CPU usually negates Power Savings features
2) overclocking the CPU can also overclock the RAM making it unstable (so manually set RAM back to correct frequency)
3) run MEMTEST to verify RAM after any change to memory
4) ensure RAM sticks are in proper configuration (one stick may only work in ONE of the four slots) according to the motherboard manual
