Hi,

I can't able to add the local port in Add Printer Wizard. It always shows that "Specified port cannot be added. Operation could not be completed". I've been spending more than 3 hours to find out the solution on the net. But yet the answer is nowhere to find. Can someone help me pls? I would really appreciate for all the suggestion and guidance!
Thx

St4lker,

Have you made sure that the spooler service is running? There are several ways of doing so but the easiest is accomplished by typing cmd in the Run dialog box and then at the command prompt, typing net start spooler.

This Microsoft tutorial on identifying and fixing common printer problems in Windows may also help.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the Windows XP End of Support date (April 8, 2014), is quickly approaching. It’s strongly recommended to take a look at migrating to a modern operating system such as Windows 7 or Windows 8.

The Springboard Series on TechNet is another resource that is available which contains articles and videos to assist with your operating system migration as well as manage your new environment once it is in place.

There is a recent Springboard blog post written by Stephen Rose that covers more about what end of support means and has many helpful links to the free tools you will need to migrate from Windows XP to whichever operating system you should choose.

Hi Emerald,

The printer is Epson LQ-300+II Dot Matrix Printer attached to the PC via parallel port and have shared on the network.

Hi Mike,

I have checked the spooler service and restarted it several times but no luck.
Here is the story, the PC attached to the printer is installed Win7 and shared this printer (Epson LQ-300+II) on the network. I can able to connect this printer by using Add Printer Wizard and added the local port from 1 of my users who has WinXP installed. But another user who has installed WinXP can't able to add the local port when i went thru same procedure. The error says that "Specified port cannot be added. Operation could not be completed." Then I logged in as the local admin account and tried to add it again. Yet the result is the same error. One more thing, I can able to see that printer on that PC if I go thru by \\pcname\sharedprintername. I really don't know what could be the problem. I disabled the windows firewall and Kaspersky firewall as well to make sure firewall is not blocking. Can help provide another steps to troubleshoot?

I really appreciate your facts and links that you provided about the WinXP support. I will definitely go to your links and check it. I have several PCs which had been migrated to Win7 but left some PCs with WinXP. But those WinXP PCs yet to migrate due to some compatibility issues of our mechanical machine.

Sorry for my poor English.
Thx for your guidance and suggestion :)
