I have been running Windows 7 and Vista in a dual boot system for some time. Vista is on a partition of a hard drive and Win 7 is on a 64 Gb SSD. I have been using Vista most as that wa my original system but I now want to switch to Windows 7. My problem is that my games, email, ptp etc are all installed through Vista. Can i reinstall them in the same place through Win7 and keep all my data or do I have to bite the bullet and redo everything? I can't just update from Vista to Win 7 cos Vista is 32 bit and Win 7 is 64 bit.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear, but I realise that I can't do the upgrade from Vista 32 bit to Win7 64 bit, that's why I dual booted it in the first place. Win 7 is on an SSD and Vista is on a partition of one of my hard drives.

What I want to know is whether I can boot into Win 7 and install, say, Steam to the same folder that it is installed in under Vista and keep my game data. The same applying to my email, peer to peer software etc.

Which email client are you using as windows 7 does NOT have a email client.
If using Vista Winmail you will have to backup your email to a format that can be used in which ever email client you use. Can google "convert Vista emails to xxxxx"

Choices for email for win 7, if currently using Vista winmail:
1) Windows live mail
2) a 3rd party client such as Mozillia Thunderbird
... See for a list: http://email.about.com/od/windowsemailclients/tp/free_email_prog.htm
3) Expensive unless you already have: Outlook (NOT Outlook express). Is free if you have the more expensive Microsoft office package that hase it.
4) You can port Vista Winmail over to Windows 7. However:
... More involved:
See - http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/191729-enabling-windows-mail-windows-7-a.html
.. In Your case you would need the Windows mail folder from a 64 Bit Vista installation (Problem is you have 32 bit version)
PS This does work as I did this for My Wife's system - She Hates change and Liked Vista Win mail - Very simular to her previous outlook express. But as I said it is more involved procedure.

Not a gamer, but I think there is a method to point stream to your old folder.

PSS:
I know some say that a 60 Gig SSD is OK, and when SSDs where pretty expensive, still are But cost has come down conderably, I find many individuals run in to space problems.
Max usable size for a 60 gig SSD is only about 45 gigs.
.. 60 gig formated is approx 56 gigs.
.. Initially they said you should leave 10% unused, that has doubled to 20% free. This is to allow Wear leveling, Garbage collection and TRIM to work their magic to maintain performance. Users have gotten in trouble by using 90% + and the SSD's performance has tanked - slower than a HDD.
.. The min size for a OS + Program SSD drive is around 80/90 gigs with the recommended size of 120/128 gigs.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply. I use Thunderbird for my email. The SSd is purely used for the os, all my data is stored on several hard drives, a couple of which are divided into partitions. I've been putting off switching to Win 7 because I can do without the hassle. However I'm hoping to do an upgrade later in the year so I figure it's time to bite the bullet. I'm intending to get a new motherboard and graphics card and possibly new memory. I may see if the budget will stretch to a bigger SSD.
