Latop suddenly cannot handle most of my games

Ok, so here is the issue...I have an Acer Aspire 5745g (cca 2 years old) and recently the laptop just cannot run most of the games which used to be no problem for it. The hardware is not damaged, I am sure of that, but the weird thing is that some games are no problem (to clarify: a simple game like Minecraft causes the laptop to freeze with the fans kicking in after a few minutes, which leads to an eventual automatic shutdown -if I do not force it to shut down. On the other hand, I can play World of Warcraft for hours and nothing happens, nothing overheats, everything runs smoothly...but as soon as I run any other game/software, the latop goes nuts).
I know this is kind of childish, but the reason why I want to play certain games is because I make money by plaing them (eg. FIFA 13), and the laptop has never had any problem with them.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?

With laptops, first guess is always heat. Check the operation / cleanliness of the fan(s) and then a slightly obscure thing - I had a problem with an Acer Travelmate that was constantly running Everquest - turned out that lots of heat in the laptop had dried the thermal pad connecting the Southbridge to the heatpipe cooler. This caused random slowdows / crashes under gaming load and then finally blew altogether. Might be worth opening it up and checking the cooling system is still as it should be :)

ALready done that (as I already said, the hardware is not a problem). It just seems weird to me that one game can run without any problem and many other games cannot, while being more demanding (in terms of specs).

I have already checked that, hardware altogether seems flawless. My guess is software, but it is not a virus, there are no unknown/suspicious processes running, and to be honest I am geting more and more desperate, because so far nothing has helped, not even a tiny bit.

Minecraft is horribly coded and takes up more resources than you would imagine - depending on settings / population, WoW can be extremely easy on the CPU / GPU

So your guess is a faulty CPU/GPU or its cooling?

Well, I did not mention it (but yeah, I checked the hardware in general), so you do not have to apologize. But do you have any other suggestions?

Laptops are always a compromise between heat management and too much size / weight, so it's a natural presumption to guess that heat is the problem somewhere.

My next step after the physical check would be to use tools such as CPU-Z and GPU-Z to monitor performance, hopefully pointing to which component is causing the issues.

Well, the thing is, everytime I try any game (except WoW), the CPU temperature just goes up gradually, but not reaching the extreme/risky heights (105 degrees in case of my CPU -Intel i7-740QM) and still causing the laptop to freeze and eventually shutdown. Would posting the error logs help anyhow?
