I need help with building a desktop, do not know much about which parts work best together since I've been playing on my old laptop for ages and it's time for a new upgrade.

Approximate Purchase Date: This Month.

Budget Range: $1000

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, Video editing, Internet Browsing

Are you buying a monitor: Yes

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg.com, tigerdirect.com

Location: Deland, Florida, United States

Parts Preferences: Don't have a preference

Overclocking: Maybe

SLI or Crossfire: Yes / No / Maybe

Your Monitor Resolution: Would like to get an Asus VS238H-P 23"

Additional Comments: Will be mainly playing games like Battlefield 4(when it is out) and Borderlands 2, Dayz standalone..whenever it's finished. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How about the one from the System Builder Marathon Q1 2013?

costs more, and prices have changed since then so maybe it'll cost even more.
Asrock is hit-or-miss quality and not suitable for OC'ing
7870 XT is powerful than the regular
have SSD & 1TB HDD for storage

Logically this is better than system marathon

Looks good for the most part but I don't have a Microcenter around here, just curious what would the nvidia equivalent to that graphics card be? Also would I really have a need for the Solid State Disk?

You can buy the CPU for $30 more on Newegg or Amazon. There isn't really a nVidia equivalent. Closest will probably be the GTX 660 Ti, but 7870 is better. As for the SSD, you don't need it, but if you like quicker load times, get it.

If you don't want a SSD, you can subtract it and add the monitor instead (though it's a definite advantage as ksham said ) .

The Nvidia equivalent to 7870 XT is GTX 670, however it's more expensive, and since you're not doing 3D, AE and adobe stuff, therefore you don't need a CUDA technology or so to take advantage of the Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration ..So the HD7870 XT is your best choice.
The microcenter part was covered by kisham, so thanks kisham :)
