I just bought a new laptop running windows 8 64 bit (joys) and every time I try to load the game it crashes from the very first screen. (The one with the copyright and trademark information.) There is no error message and the game just closes. Any help you can give me. Thanks

The biggest cause for this, especially with the Total War games, is graphics driver. Make sure you update your graphics drivers, and even motherboard drivers, before trying to play any of these RAM hogs on Windows 8. 
If you are totally up to date, the next possible culprit might be the .NET framework.
