My power went out yesterday for a couple of minutes. Unfortunately my laptop with the auxilary monitor was running at the time. When I booted up again, the laptop seems to be fine but the monitor no longer comes on. Could the power outage have fried it?

Debug checklist:
>Check for a tripped RCD / blown fuse in you're Power distribution board
>Check the fuse on the TV (normally in the plug
>Check for a reset or similar on the TV
>Post finer details about what your TV still does / doesn't do here, along with details of you TV make and model

If you do not know how to do any of the above safely get a qualified professional to do it. I do not take responsibility for you shocking/injuring/killing you self by doing something out of your depth / plain stupid. (yes that alppys to making a detailed forum post as well)

Yes, the display on the laptop works, and yes, it's an external monitor...LCD.

I assume you mean an external monitor. Was it LCD or CRT?[/quotemsg]

Yeah unfortunately the switching supply for the monitor probably burned out in the power fluctuation.
Someone experienced in electronics can open it up and looks for bad capacitors but I strongly recommend against it for a beginner because of potentially high voltage present.
