Hey all! I am building a new rig to take with me to college this year and I wanted your help with graphics cards. I've been leaning towards a 670, however, I am planning on upgrading to the new Maxwell architecture when it comes out next year, so I'm not sure if I need to spend that much. My current rig has a 560 Ti w/ 1gb VRAM. I want to be able to be able to play all games at Ultra or High. Which GPU should I get (a 660 Ti, 670, or another 560 Ti)? I will be gaming on 1 24-27" 1080p monitor.

Solution
Please do not get another 560 TI. If you do, I pray your experience is fruitful and without turmoil. The 1GB of RAM will really limit your eye candy options.

A 670 is a very solid option. I actually sold my 2 560 TI's and went with 1 670 and it's alot better. Another option for you to consider is a 7970 as they are the same price as the 670? They are at least in Australia and you might get some better performance out of that.

I also see no reason why a 660ti won't suit your needs. My GFs computer has a Gainward 660 Golden Sample and it can play BF3 on Ultra with MSAA not a problem at 1080p and a 660ti is more powerful.

Bottom line: Don't SLI, get a 670 if you really want nVidia, otherwise get 7970 :)
so 1 560Ti still not enough for you? if you're planning on upgrading next year why upgrade now? 560 Ti should be decent for 1080p although you might need to turn down the setting down for more demanding games. but if you really got cash to spend around my suggestion is to get 670.

The rest of my system might be bottlenecking it, though I am not sure as the pc itself isn't custom, I just replaced the GPU in it. I will check in just one second. My worry is that the 1 Gb of VRAM is not enough to play very many games with mods (like Skyrim), would this be an issue given that I will only be on one monitor?

Thanks, I was leaning towards a 670 or a 660 Ti, but I'll be doing more research. Maxwell comes out next year so I worry that spending the money on a 670 would be a waste, but then I would probably just hold off on Maxwell for a little while.

BTW: I am currently using a 560 Ti with a Core 2 Quad running at 2.4 Ghz with 4gb of RAM

i'm not playing skyrim but i heard the game can use tons of VRAM when you play with tons of mod with it.

btw based on my past experience your current cpu already holding back your gpu. my E7500 (2.93Ghz stock) are bottlenecking my GTX460 in some games. have to OC my cpu to 3.6Ghz to reduce the bottlenecking effect

Good point i agree.

I am building a totally new rig for college. It will have an i7 (I realize that it's way more than I need, but it's currently $100 off at microcenter and it will last me a long time) with 8 gb of ram. I will be able to save up once I am in college by working wherever I can so I just want the cheapest card that will run games at max or close to it until Maxwell comes out

Haha yeah I figured that much! My dad is going to take over my current PC for work once I build my own, but I can salvage the card if I decide to go that route, it just seems like 1 gb isnt enough VRAM. I'll do some more research in the mean time, however
