I've never had a problem with a DVD except on older BIOSs that don't read from a DVD only CDs. You did choose to boot first from the DVD in either your BIOS setup or boot order didn't you? If your BIOS is the problem then it's easiest to install it to a USB key.

AFAIK, this issue is only the recent 64-bit versions.

Which happen to be the first to require a DVD rather than a CD. ;)

btw I planned on using ubuntu regardless but I heard all this talk about how terrible windows 8 was and i thought to myself it looks kinda cool it cant be that bad.................man was I mistaken, I completely underestimated how bad it actually is lol.

And it's only like a few MBs over too. Silly Ubuntu.

I made a DVD for the moment because I didn't have a USB. Though even if I plan to completely replace windows with Ubuntu do I need to create a new partition first?

The installer will guide you through partitioning it. I've been through 3 DVDs trying different methods to get it working. None worked. I did the USB and it works. Though, kind of pointless for me since I haven't touched it since I've installed it. Only installed it for Steam.

ok thanks ill probably run out and grab a USB later today and try it that way. With the USB can I just drag the ISO onto it or is there another way I have to put it on the stick?

Ok so booting and installing of Ubuntu is seriously kicking my but, the dvd wasn't booting so I decided to go buy a cheap USB and try booting from it but every time I try I get a message saying something like "System does not have USB in boot option menu" I have no idea how to get it in there ive checked and it does say that USB boot is enabled.

You need to use unetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ to install a live copy of Ubuntu to a USB flash from a windows machine. It will ask you where the Ubunt ISO is, it will ask you if the flash has room or needs formatting, and if you want to use some extra space for saving to, say yes.
