No video after installing Nvidia drivers and using a DVI adapter

Completed a brand new Vista 32bit installation with a GeForce 8600 GTS on my brother's computer. The monitor is connected via VGA cable and DVI-to-VGA adapter. During the Vista installation everything worked fine. After installing the Nvidia drivers the monitor works up until the Windows loading screen completes, then it goes blank. If I connect a DVI cable at this time it comes back on (my monitor has both inputs, my brother's doesn't), but it doesn't work with the VGA cable + DVI adapter. If I uninstall the Nvidia drivers everything works again. I've tried changing the resolution but that doesn't help at all.

Can anyone suggest a possible cause and/or solution?

Turns out it was a limitation of the monitor. After installing Nvidia drivers the monitor would no longer recognize the video signal after loading Windows when using a DVI-adapter. I tried a different (older) monitor and it worked. Strange.
