So I installed a radeon 7970 and now i can't get into BIOS anymore. I have a maximus v gene. I used to see the rog logo but now its a black screen until the OS boots. any ideas? its got something to do with the card since after i installed it this happened. Using HDMI. Nothing else is wrong. card performs flawlessly. A weird thing though. The windows logo as the OS boots changed to a scrolling green bar like vista used to have (im using win7). When I unplug the card, I can get into BIOS. How do I fix this? I shouldn't have to take things apart just to use it.

My apologies the name didn't catch my eye.

Are you using a PS/2 keyboard? If so try using the DEL key on the numeric pad or hitting F8

The DEL key above the arrow keys (not in the num pad may not work)

Well this one did. if you look at the v gene's bios, there aren't really any options that interact with the PCIe slots.

Please check the advanced -> system agent section to ensure you have no option

Failing that, maybe a new bios version is out for you?

If I remember correctly, I managed to get into BIOS by using the HDMI built in port. But I had to unplug the 7970 to do so which means that BIOS wouldn't detect it causing that option to dissapear.

I wouldn't think it would be a faulty board. I never had a problem with my previous gtx card. maybe and amd incompatibility?

If the card is powered, black screen even though windows still boots. if the card is not powered, I can get into BIOS, but once the card is back on, im stuck again.

There can't be any incompatibility issues. Standards are in place to avoid that issue.

Can you try the graphics card in another system? Just to see if the same problem is present.

RAM can't be doing this. Nothing else hardware-wise could affect this to my knowledge.

Otherwise I am putting my money on the motherboard right now.

So I went in and tried switching to PCIe in the bios. Same result, skips right over prompt when I hook it back up.

New update: I plugged in a gtx 670 and now its normal again. Normal boot screen and I can access BIOS. Now the question is, was this caused by the manufacturer? As in, can I buy another 7970 from a different manufacturer and have it work?

So everything works with the GTX 670.

When the 7970 is plugged in then it fails.

I would easily put my money on the card just being bad. But it may help ensure functionality if you get another reputable vendor's card. Perhaps research and see either is recommended or what others have used a lot.

I have this exact same problem. During boot, I do hit DEL, and I can only suspect that it has entered the bios screen, however the screen is black. So the screen is black until it enters the windows OS.
