Only 24 of 32gb of RAM are recognized by the BIOS.

I purchased exactly these part:

Full PC Part Picker Parts List

CPU: Intel Core i7-3930K 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor ($574.99 @ Newegg Canada)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($99.99 @ Canada Computers)
Motherboard: Asus P9X79 ATX LGA2011 Motherboard ($268.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Memory: Patriot Intel Extreme Master, Limited Ed 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($219.99 @ NCIX)

This is my first ever build, so I don't have a lot of experience - but would appreciate some guidance!

I was very cautious to ensure that I followed the memory configuration outlined in the text. 4x8gb in A1, B1, D1, C1. BIOS reports that B1 is "abnormal".

What can/should I do?

Hi

Remove the sticks and perform a memory test using http://www.memtest.org/

You might have damaged the ram during installation. Are u using an anti-static wrist strap

Could be a few issues. Could be a bios code bug.make sure the mb bios is up to date. The ram stick you have is bad. Take out all the ram and place the one none working stick in slot a0. See if the error is the stick or the slot. If the stick works in a slot.take another ram stick and place it by itself in the slot with the error. Make sure the pin are fine on that ram slot. If the error still on that slot with another stick of ram then you may have a bent pin under the CPU. New intel CPU the ram controller inside the CPU.

I ran memtest, putting them all in D1 (as per the recommendation of the guide book from ASUS). In each case, the sticks passed without exception. I have all 32GB's of RAM in one side (D2, D1, C2, C1) and all 32GB's of ram are being recognized. But my understanding is that configuring it this way will reduce performance. But I'm not sure if it's to a degree that I may care about.

With respect to your second suggestion - I did notice that one of the pins in the CPU bed looked _marginally_ (it's hard to tell) flatter when I installed the CPU, but I didn't pay it much attention given that it's brand new.
