i'm looking to spend around £200 on pc sound for listening to music(i have good quality files), i want a soundcard and speakers (no more than 2.1) for music, i will play games but don't care about sound in those.
I might suggest you spend all of your budget on the best speakers you can buy.
Onboard HD sound is very good. At least try onboard first.
You can always add one later.
It makes no sense to buy high end sound with low end speakers.

I'd like to disagree - I have a cheap Genius SW-HF 5.1 5000 speaker set and the difference between the onboard Audio and my old 2006 SB X-Fi is colossal. Got my SB X-Fi titanium few years back and the sound improved even more
And believe me, the difference will be even bigger with decent speakers like Harman Kardon SoundSticks or Logitech Z623 or a sound card like Asus Xonar DSX or higher /or even Sound Blaster, but they are more gaming oriented. Great piece of hardware nonetheless/...
