poor performance for gaming

Hi my name is chris. I bought an Alienware m18x r2 laptop, and have had poor performance problems from my sli gtx 680m set up. What I notice while running heaven benchmark 4.0 basic edition is that my gpu usage stays around 95-99%, for both gpus, and my cpu usage stays at about 33% overall. That last core it seems like is staying at at least double that if not around 80% constantly.

forgot to mention benchmark score for heaven 4.0: 835, avg of 35 fps max of 59 low of 7.

playing warframe, as soon as a large amount of enemies spawn, my cpu performance shoots up and gpu usage drops to almost nothing.

here is some info

I have looked for hours and hours and tried many different things. But none have worked so far. It seems like im getting worse performance from two gpus than i would normally get from one of the same kind, and considerably worse performance. My other computer with a single radeon hd 5700 can run some games just as well if not better, though it doesn't have the capabilities that a gtx 680m would. the video cards seem to stay around 68-72 degrees celcius while running heaven as well.

if anyone has the time to help me out i would appreciate any advice. I'm about to try and see if dell can help me, but for some reason i doubt they will in the end.

btw, my thoughts are possibly some sort of throttling setting that i can't see or have access to. Maybe something is wrong with it, or the switch to i/o gfx function that automatically occurs when you unplug the laptop from the ac adapter is malfunctioning, but everything I have tried to fix those possible problems has not worked.

More about poor performance gaming
  1. What frames are you seeing while actually gaming, i would consider that more important than benchmark numbers. Also what resolution are you gaming at, i would assume 1920x1080, your vomit of information probably contains the res of your monitor but i didn't feel the need to read through it. Get fraps and play for about 20 mins on whatever res you normally play at and tell us your max and min frames from that session with res and detail level.
  2. laptop + gaming... bad choice... No upgrade path. :-(

Likely a heat issue.... get a cooler for the system that plugs into the usb and keeps it 10-20 cooler... I t will help... also clean it out too, use low pressure air (20~ psi) and blow out the vents.

IF you are froggy.... take is a part and clean i tout too.
  3. Keep in mind that the Heaven benchmark is designed to keep CPU usage low so as not to have it interfere with GPU testing.

When playing real games this depends much more on what's on the screen, so as soon as scenes get complicated then CPU performance kick in as what's slowing things down, and thus your GPU's are sitting around waiting on frames doing nothing.

What you are seeing is pretty normal behavior IMO. Are you sure you don't have VSync forced on in your driver somewhere, seems liek the frame cap of 59 on Heaven is a little suspect, but could be coincidence.
  4. i run everything at 1920x1080, everything max, except for any 3d settings as i dont have a 3d monitor. v sync is off.
Well while playing warframe, the fps is an average of 40-45 fps at first, and as enemies spawn the fps decreases to as little as an avg of 20 fps. At this point, when im running a low fps, the gpu usage is around 5-15% and the cpu usage is around 40% avg, with at least one core way higher. When the fps is around 45, the gpu usage hovers around 20-25%, more so 20. The gpu usage is actually higher in menus.

On black ops 2, i avegerage anywhere from 30 to over 100 fps. The cpu usage is much higher in the game, average of 55%, and the gpu agains is around 40-70% when im running at 60 fps or above and at around 20% when im running less than 60.

In crysis 3, I tested in the 2nd mission with lots of grass and flare effects, water, etc.. it's a beautiful, and i ran on a low avg of 20 fps, when there was a lot of grass on the screen, and around 35-35 fps otherwise, 50 fps looking only at the ground with almost nothing on the screen. During this my cpu usage is 80-90% and both gpu's usage around 40-45%. In a simple area like the tutorial, my fps is about 100. In the first mission when looking at areas with rain im at around 15-25 fps , otherwise around 30 fps.

I did notice while running a gpu test from dell that the only test that it performed really poorly on was a wireframe test of some sort.

for crysis i used nvidia's Geforce experience software to optimize the video settings, and made sure vsync was off. it put everything at max except shaders at high, AA at 1xSMAA low, object medium, shadows medium, post processing high.

I repeatedly have to set the cards default vsync setting to off, tho it switches to app controlled pretty often. Happens in some games too.
  5. Btw I dont think its heat now as I have put my cooling pad under the laptop and it stays under 50 degrees celcius most of the time now.
  6. I was under the impression that the gtx 6xxm series of mobile graphics was just rebranded 500 series?
  7. Quick update, i downloaded and used throttlestop to see if i could control cpu's overclocking. When i set it to turbo, everything got better. I average 50-70 and above fps in all areas of crysis, and i average the same of 50-60 fps in warframe. Is the turbo boost not functioning properly on its own or something?

my benchmark scores are still low though.
  8. Again, this all looks like pretty normal operation. Most games these days have one big main thread with all the little threads like asset loading or network code split out. This makes a CPU meter look low because one core is really busy while the others aren't so much. The more units and AI and meshes you have on the screen the more CPU bound the game gets and the more time your video cards sit around waiting for frames to render lowering their usage.

One good way to test if the slow downs really are the CPU or not is to run through a set of benchmarks with anti aliasing off and then again with something like super sampling on. You need to use Fraps or something that can record min/max/average frames, but if you notice between the two runs that all three numbers drop by a similar amount then it's probably your video cards slowing things down, but if you max and average drop but your minimum stays pretty much the same then you can tell that times where slow down occurs your video cards are just waiting around on data (hence they have lots of time to anti-alias the screen and not effect frame rates).
  9. Hello, it seems that you have a problem. Here my main 4 reasons why I think you have this problem:

    1. It's Alienware, not that they're bad, but... they're not that good...
    2. Your Alienware Mobo
    3. Your Intel i7-3740QM CPU
    4. It's a laptop

That CPU and Mobo combo isn't that great together, plus that CPU isnt the best for gaming. I honestly think you should try to refund or sell that Laptop and go with something really meant for a gamer, like this (unless you want to overclock your Laptop then put it on dry ice):

Case- Ultra Rogue M925 ATX Full Tower Gaming Case $80

Mobo- ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 LGA 1155 w/ Thermal Plating $240

    CPU- Intel i7-3770k 3.5GHz Unlocked w/ Fan $320

GPU- Galaxy GeForce GTX 680 GC 4GB $510 With Rebate (Ends 5/19/2013, then goes up to $550)

    OR

Galaxy GTX 670 2GB GC $370 With Rebate (Ends 5/19/2013, then goes up to $410)

    OR

Galaxy GeForce GTX 670 4GB GC $430 (Same Rebate, then up to $470)

PSU- CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 $110 (If you want to do Dual SLI then go with the 850 version of this)

    RAM & Operating System- CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 Combined with Windows 7 Pro SP1 $255

    OR (As Sperate)

    CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 $65
    Windows 7 Pro SP1 $140
    =$205

And then whatever HDD and whatever else you want. I got a Seagate Barracude 2TB for $100.

At the max without rebate it'd be $1795, and at the lowest with rebate it'd be $1525 (Both with only one GPU including the HDD). I think this would be prime.

    Hope this helped :P

Yeah, definitely agreed with the statement I previously made, you really only get a laptop for gaming if your playing small games or RPGs like LoL, WoW, Starcraft, games along those lines, and if you can find a great one for a decent price, which usually isn't that easy to come by.
