ok so should i get the msi gtx 660 oc twin frozr($205) or the xfx radeon hd 7870($240)? im gonna play a lot of games at 1080p max settings btw and im kinda interested in physx

is it worth the extra 35 bucks?
who has the better current drivers?
how signifigant is physx?

More about : 7870 660

Physx is not important.

I love the twin frozr series the cooling is excellent.

The 7870 are really high quality cards and you get two free games. The graphics performance would be noticeable...I'd go with the 7870.

skip the 7870 standard, go for a 7870 LE from Powercolor, Sapphire and some other vendors. Near 7950 performance for the same price as the xfx card.

What games do you want to play? The 7870 is faster but is it necessary? Depends on the games you play.

the 660 pretty much nips at the heels of the 7870, its about 2% slower overall, faster at some games, slower at others. I have one and while it runs most games at ultra 1080p quite well, it wont run crisis 3 at ultra very comfortably, but neither will the 7870. Also think about your cpu, if its too slow you wont see as much benefit from a gpu upgrade. If you want to run all games ultra settings 1080p you really need a gtx680 or better or 7970 or better paired with an overclocked i5 3570k or better.

Here is what I have come to know:
660<7870<660ti<=7870XT<7950

So what I reccomend:
Go with the 7870xt. You will get the same performance as the 660ti but for $250 instead of $300
Phys-x is not very important. Few games use it. It makes a difference in some synthetic benchmarks but who gives a damn about those. You wamt gaming performance and 7870xt gives great performance for $250.
I would avoid the 660 at all costs. If you were deciding between a 7850 amd 660 i would aay 660 but if you have the extra $50ish to get to the 7870xt DO IT! You wont regret it for a second.

I would disagree. I game at 1080p and im running an fx-6300 and a 7950 boost edition and there isnt a game i havent been able to play maxed out on ultra with 8xmsaa (aside from crysis 3) and stay above 30fps at all times.
Crysis 3 if i have ultra and 4xmsaa i peak at 60fps and minimum at 28fps.

A 7870xt (what i reccomend for him) would be able to run almost every game at 1080p on ultra with at least 4xmsaa, and some games with 8msaa.
So long as he doesnt bottleneck his cpu. However anything at a fx-6300 or better (i5s/i7s/fx-8xxx) cpus will work great with it!

Corrected.....660<7870<7870XT<7950=660ti

I play multiplayer games and i won't settle for less than 55-60fps. BF3: 660ti @1080 ultra 2or4xMSAA 60fps.

If 660 vs 7870. Get 7870, it will push things more at 1080p.

A 660TI might of been close to a 7950, but now there is no way in hell its equal. The 7950 completely decimates all cards when overclocked. Hell anything less than 1.1 GHZ is considered a dud card. At 1.1 GHZ it even beats a 680. At 1.2 GHZ it'll beat a 680 overclocked highly too. A 660TI will completely fall when it comes to AA.

660ti isnt even close to a 7950.. Its below a 7870xt and above a 7870.
And thats at stock..
Take a 7950 overclocked, and pair it against a gtx 680 (yes a 680) that has also been overclocked, and the 7950 will beat it.
The 7870xt isnt far behind the 7950 either. My guess would be that if you were to push the 7870xt then it could get to nearly the performance of a 670. I dont think it will pass the 670 but probably get close.

OP:
Please choose the 7870xt. For the extra $10 you just get SO MUCH CARD for your money!

So funny. I told my friends your joke about a 660ti under a 7870xt... we all had a good chuckle.

7870xt is the same as 7870le (its technically 7870xt. But its codename that shows up goes from tahiti(7870) to tahiti le(7870xt).
If you are willing to throw the extra $50 you will get your money's worth and more from it. If you cant afford the extra $50, budget is budget. Go for the 660.

My bad.. What i meamt when i said that is for gaming.
I can see that you might laugh at the 660ti being under the 7870xt in synthetic benchmarks. But i am talking about gaming.
Gaming: 660ti<7870xt
Synthetics (a.k.a the thing almost nobody cares about): 7870xt<660ti.
