I'm helping a friend reset his old vista laptop, but just after windows finishes the factory reset, the computer will shut itself off, and again once it is resumed. Finally it will throw an error message telling me to restart the installation. Retrying gave us the same problem.

The laptop has a history of overheating, but it was not nearly as hot during the installation as it has been previously. The only thing I can think of is hardware failure, but I'd like some outside opinions. I'll be checking the computer out again at roughly 12pm EST. Thank you for taking the time to read this and any ideas are welcome!

I'll edit this tomorrow with specific information. All I remember right now is that it's an HP laptop.

Alright, so the laptop is an HP Pavilion dv5-1002us Entertainment Notebook PC, the factory reset trys to install Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

I do have the discs for a factory reset and have tried it multiple times. My next idea is to try loading up Windows 7 on it and hope the problem was Vista specific.
