Hello, first of all, thank you for your time.I have been gaming at 1080p for quite a while now but noticed the gtx 550 ti just isn't capable of running decent fps at such resolution. Here are my full specs.
-i5-3750k@4.2
-8gb g.skill
-550ti 1gb
-mb=p8z77-v lk

I play mostly bf3 and arma 2 at the lowest possible settings.I tweaked everything from the nvidia panel to get the best performance. One thing that seemed to do it was setting gpu scaling in nvidia panel and lowering in-game resolution.Playing with black bars around my screen, thus giving me a good 10 fps (approximately).Would I be better getting a 1680x1050 monitor ,or just keep doing the gpu scaling.

-Thanks,Oli

It would be better to play at your displays resolution and tune down game settings such as shadows and depth of field and disable motion blur (its an unneeded and horrid performance hog for covering up low fps)

up scaling i find looks worse than native resolution and tuning graphics options.

Of course, I tweaked both games for absolute max fps(with extended testing) , still 1080p just sucks it all out of my poor 550ti. Therefore, I was thinking maybe if I stopped scaling down resolution with my 1920x1080 and just get a cheap 1680x1050 and run it native.(For the time that me and my morals argue on buying the 670)

Why are you downscaling? That won't help performance any. In fact it makes it worse as the GPU has to downscale the output after rendering it at full resolution.

In game, set the resolution to 1600x900 or 1366x768. Then have your monitor upscale it or in nVidia have it upscale it to native monitor resolution.

I'm pretty sure that is what they meant.

Anyways, this used to be how we all used monitors when CRT's were the norm. Of course they didn't have native resolutions then. Hopefully your monitor has the ability to upscale built in, or you could, if you prefer, not to have it upscale at all, and live with black bars on the sides of the image.

Well instead of wasting money on a monitor just save up and get a GTX 670. After using it for a few minutes your morals will thank you! It is a great card and your gamer in you will thank you. It is a very good upgrade from the 550ti you have now. And much better than wasting money on a monitor you do not really need.

My bad. Didn't read carefully. OP did say lower in game resolution.
