So yea, like the subject title says I'm pretty new to overclocking. I've been reading up on it a bit, and watching a few video guides (especially this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBEeXajbG2o). Now he says and does a few interest things, like turning off C state, and EIST. I'm curious if this is necessary tho? From what I've read at other sites turning off EIST and C state are a throwback to the old days of overclocking. He also uses a fixed voltage, I've heard people argue against this tho.

Either way I feel like the video is pretty damn good, and I've learned a bit (keep in mind I haven't overclocked yet, since I'd rather get as much information as I can.)

I like his "take it one step at a time approach", however I'm also looking for opinions and such. He's obviously using a gigabyte board (I'm using asus) so somethings are out of sorts (not where they would be on a gigabyte board).

So my questions are pretty straight forward:

  • ■ Should I turn off C state & EIST?
    ■ Should I follow what he does in the video and turn loadline calibration to extreme?
    ■ Should I follow what he does and use a fixed voltage?
    ■ Should I update my bios before hand (I'm still rocking the bios that came with the board. I've heard arguments against updating your bios unless you're having serious issues)

If anyone with experience overclocking on a maximus or asus board would like to chime in on things I should look at, any help would be appreciated.
