I have a 3TB external WD drive with a USB3 port. It was given to me by a friend who told me that it was either password protected or encrypted, but he doesn't remember which. I tried to access the drive through Explorer and can get it to show, but that's all. I tried Partition Wizard to try and reformat the drive, but everything is greyed out and says Bad Drive and can't format it. I know he hasn't had the drive very long so it is likely still okay. He had reinstalled Windows 7 and forgot what he protected it with.

So is there a way to force format the drive so I can use it? I don't care about the data that's on the drive.

Thanx,

Your best bet might be this:

1. WRITE ZEROS ( www.ultimatebootcd.com or other "low-level" formatting tool to overwrite all data on drive)
2. FORMAT as NTFS
3. Reinstall Western Digital software (not necessary. In fact I didn't even use this on my WD drive.)

I don't own that drive so I can't provide more insight.
