I have no idea what any of that means, all I know is that when I opened it up to look it had a lot of slots for RAM. Heres a photo that has a good shot of the RAM if it helps. http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/PeterTLJr/media/20130419_101644.jpg.html?sort=3&o=1

You have 6 slots for ram , that means it's a triple channel motherboard and in some cases to have 4,8,16gb of ram to work you have to fill all the white slots and the one black slot closest to the cpu socket. Right now you have 4 sticks of 1gb each and to get 8gb to work you need a set of 4 sticks at 2gb each put in the same slots that the ones you have now. You also have the option of getting a 12gb set, 3sticks of 4gb each and they would go into the white slots.
When I say white and black slots I'm referring to the color of the snap connectors at the end or each slot. I just mention the 12gb option in case you have a need for more then the 8gb as you didn't mention the reason for the upgrade.

ah ok that explains things much easier, appreciate the help. so would any ram sticks work as long as i fill the white ones up and 1 black as you said? but cant go over 12 gb

Well as I said with it being a triple channel board you can get a triple channel kit that has 3 sticks of ram and then you would only have to use the white slots. If you got a 8gb kit or 16gb kit and those had four sticks then you would have to use the three white and one black. As far as the total capacity of what that board will support you would have to consult your owners manual or Dell support, but from my experience the X-58 boards will support up to 24gb of ram.

What do you use the computer for?

ok so the white ones need to be all used and filled first, then black starting from left to right? I use it for gaming, I want to fix it back into shape so I can play like World of Warcraft, Star wars the old republic, stuff like that.

Ok, well you won't need more then 8gb of ram because gaming doesn't use that much no matter how much is installed. You can have 16gb or 24gb installed but the actual ram usage will not go above 6gb or 7gb. To verify this I had the resource manager open while gaming and the memory usage never went above 5.5gb and that was while playing BF3. So your plan of 8gb will be enough.

sweet yeah I only wanted to go up to 8gb so that works perfect. now I have another question, even though its a triple channel can I use it as a dual channel? because if i can i'd save so much money lol. i think you answered it before i just want to double check.

Your motherboard manual will have a diagram of what slots to use if your using dual channel ram and currently you are using it as dual channel, so if you have four sticks of dual channel you would use the same slots as you are now. So if your buying a dual channel ram kit make sure it's four sticks of 2gb each for 8gb or four sticks of 4gb each for 16gb and then you can use the same slots that you are now.
