My 2 cents:

My personal advice is to buy the 3-slot Asus and overclock it from 925MHz to 1000MHz. It has a massive heatsink which is especially important under load. So it will be QUIETER than the Sapphire or Gigabyte under load.

I have the Asus GTX680 DC2T which is essentially the same 3-slot cooler and while the Kepler GPU uses less power (less heat) it's also working at 1250MHz (boost clock) so I have little doubt the HD7970 GPU won't run nicely at 1000MHz.

I also rarely hear my graphics card even when gaming. I strongly dislike noise from a gaming PC.

Cheers.

Dont buy Gigabyte airflow on that set up is pretty bad. I have the gigabyte 660 ti with a side panel fan on my case. it feels like it recycles the hot air cause of the lack of directing the airflow from the rear and the front, but directing the hot air from the side where my side intake fan is blowing.

I have a 7970 GHz it mostly works but it seems faulty anyway I could only OC it to 1150 mhz core and 1550mhz memory and have it be completely stable as a novice, I might have been been able to get either core or mem up by a little more like 10-15mhz but higher than that and it gave me a brown screen, I couldn't be arsed figuring if it was memory or core so I left it.

A basic 7970 seems like it could pretty close to what I got so in hindsight I'd say it's pointless to buy a Ghz edition 7970.
