I'm making my first rig and really need assistance with this. I know you guys probably get 1000s of these types of threads a day, so I will try to make this as detailed as possible to avoid too much headaches for you guys.

Preferences:
Computer Usage - I want to do a lot of heavy 3d rendering. I plan to be doing a lot of heavy processing and rendering massive 3d files. I'm studying to manipulate programs like Blender, Unity, and Unreal Engine, but my laptop doesn't seem to handle them very well.

Size of Tower - I have adequate space in my room for any size. If worse comes to worse, I can just set the desktop on the side of my desk. I'm sort of a slob anyway...

Cooling System - This is my first rig, so I am not sure what I'll need for the type of stuff I'll be doing. I feel as if fans will be fine for the time being, but I've also heard great things about water cooling. I would very much like to use fans first, but have the option to water cool in the future. Your guy's input?

Look - I'm open to this. I do like fancy looking cases, but price and efficiency of the case is far more important.

Drive Bays - Since I'm a noob at PC building, I have no idea how many ports I need. I do plan to have 1-2 Hardrives and a SSD. So at least a couple of 5.25" and 3.25" internal ports will do. I know ports have more functions than holding hard drives. I'll research this more, but I only want "enough". If that makes sense haha.

Material - Plastic seems to be cheaper, but way more fragile. In my experience, as long as you are careful, plastic seems like a better choice. I'd really like a Steel-Plastic Hybrid if possible.
Edit: I've found many PC's are made of Plastic-Steel. Lucky me.

Concerns:
- I want to go for a Mid-sized case because its a little cheaper and I'm not sure if I need a Full-sized case just yet. However I feel I might need a larger case to upgrade to better hardware that is suitable for heavy 3d rendering.
- I'm sure a mid-sized case will be fine, but I've heard the GPUs can get massive. If I need a huge GPU (or two) to run the programs and files I want, should I get a Full-sized Tower?

My Choices:
I know based on my preferences, that I have the ability to research and find cases that I might like on my own. So here is what I found so far:
COOLER MASTER HAF X RC-942-KKN1 (Full) $199
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119225
NZXT Phantom PHAN-001WT (Full) $119
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146067
COOLER MASTER HAF 912 RC-912-KKN1 (Mid) $59 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233
COOLER MASTER HAF 922 RC-922M-KKN3-GP (mid) $115 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119197

Note: The Cooler Master cases are 20% off right now at NewEgg. So I'm really thinking about purchasing one of the three. If I decide that I should get a Full sized case, along with the deal, The HAF X seems to take my vote. However, the Phantom looks really cool (visually), and seems to be around my favored price point. If I go for a mid-sized case, then I am really looking to buy the HAF 922. Maximum PC did a custom build with it a while ago, and ever since it just appeared to be a great tower to me. The 912 is my last choice, but for $59 dollars, its a good cheap tower.

Summary:
So, in a nutshell, I want a mid-full sized tower that is capable of running 3D programs and rendering heavy 3d files/objects/worlds etc. Style doesn't matter to me, as long as it has good cooling and large enough to fit all my hardware. I want a case to last me throughout my college year (I'm going into my freshman year). My price range is $50-250, but am aiming low for my first build (Tower wise). I want to fill this tower with really good hardware (i7, Great GPUs (Dual Nvidia Titans! (yeah, I wish) ability to water cool, etc.)

Thanks for looking! I hope I was detailed enough to help you guys help me. If not, just tell me where I need to put more info. Don't be afraid to give me some tips and recommendations as it is much appreciated. I'm new to this, but am excited to be a part of this field and community.

Thanks,
-Kumo

Fractal Design Define R4 really sounds as a case for your needs, I will list below some of the key points of the case, so you can get an idea if it's something for you.

- It's a midi-tower.

- It has lots of space for cable management.

- It is built almost only of aluminium.

- It has space for the longest and biggest GPUs out there, there aren't a GPU it can't hold.

- It has space for 7 PCI slots, so you can easily fit 2 dual-slot GPUs in there.

- It has space for 2 x 280 mm or 2 x 240 mm radiators.

- It also has space for 7 x 140 mm fans or 7 x 120 mm fans.

- It has a fan controller, so you can control your fans when you need more or less air flow depending on the task you're doing.

- It has sound dampning material installed in the front and on the sides. So even though you will be doing demanding tasks, then you still can enjoy some music or the silence of your room.

- It has dust filters, so your system won't get full of dust.

- And here at last it looks hella sexy, any girl (or guy) you bring home will admire your taste of style.

I personally have used cases as NZXT 410 Phantom which are giant and have some of the best air flow out there, however the size have just been annoying and the noise from it have been terrible. So I would stay away from those.

Fractal Design Define R4 is also recommended by Tomshardware:

The pricing is somewhere from 100-120$. Have a nice time at college!

Thinking of water-cooling from the start is a good move, saves you buying another case that can support it later on if you ever want too.

Dont underestimate aesthetic value. Once you'v got everything in the case and the side panels have closed, that's the only thing about the case you will notice. Buying an expensive but ugly case is just asking for it to be thrown out sooner than it has too.
By fancy I assume you mean sleek and minimalist in design? In that case check out Fractal Design, Corsair, Thermaltake's Urban series, Coolermaster Comsos II and some Antec cases like the P280 and Eleven Hundred.

5.25" bays are what thing like your optical drives use, nothing to do with HDD/SSD's unless you use adapters.
3.5" bays are what your typical desktop HDD uses.
2.5" bays is what your SSD and laptop HDD's uses, but they can also go in 3.5" bays through the use of adapters.

Mid-Towers can hold multiple cards just fine, though as you mentioned the added space of a full tower is useful in those situations.

The HAF-X is an awesome case, use it for my rig. If water-cooling support is a concern, its got you covered for just about anything if your willing to externally mount a radiator.
To see how it works with a water-cooled rig and in general, check out my build log (in my sig).

Based on your summary, I feel a Corsair 800D or 650D might be what your looking for.

Thanks for the info, it helps me a ton!
By fancy, I mean those alien Sci-fi looking cases haha. But appearance weighs very little in my decision right now. However, by what you said, it does make sense to get a case I actually like looking at haha.
Both of those Corsair cases look really nice, but the price is holding me back. I can get the HAF X for $169 right now. And as for Mid-Towers, I'm scared to death of putting dual GPUs and a water cooling system inside of one. But if I do decide to go for one, I've narrowed my preferences to the HAF 922. I've read a lot of great things about that case and I can get it for 90$ (with 20% coupon).

If I had more of a budget on a case, I would absolutely aim for the 800d. But I'm trying to aim lower, so I am considering the HAF X or the HAF 922 (If I decide to risk getting a smaller case). What do you think?
And thanks for the input thus far, it has really encouraged me!

Both appear to be awesome cases. I'll do more research on them.
Thanks :)

Thanks, I'll make sure to be weary of Phantom cases. I want a case that is reliable so I'll stay away from the Phantom cases for the time being.

The R4 looks like an awesome case. Based on what you said, I feel it will fit me nicely. I think it's neck and neck with the HAF 922. I've been doing research on it, and it seems like one of th best mid-sized cases I have come across so far.
Thanks :D

Hmm, Sci-fi look...
That doesnt help at all . We talking an "Aliens" or "Dead Space" aesthetic where everything is industrial, or 80's sci-fi cover where everything is sleek lines and neon lights?
Check out the Coolermaster Storm series. The Storm Trooper comes in white if you want the proper... storm trooper :p... look.
Might also be good to have a look at the Bitfenix range. The Shinobi series is fairly good, the Colossus is pretty strange looking aesthetically.

Water-cooling support in a mid tower is going to be limited, there's no real way around it other than external radiator solutions. So if you decide to go that way, just be aware that your water-cooling options will be fairly limited unless you want to be hanging rads off the back, in their own dedicated rad-box or sacrificing drive bays to mount at the front.

If the HAF 922 is appealing, I suggets having a look at the HAF-XM. Great mid-tower.
