Gents:

Running AMD965 / MSI_790fx_gd70/ gtx 9800+ on fully patched Ubuntu 10.04.LTS including latest post-April 13 kernel update.

In the last two weeks my monitor on-boot has begun (random?) **flashing** on/off to a black screen **after** an initial stable mobo screen display. So the sequence-of-appearance is:

1) stable mobo flash-screen
2) alternate boot-display/black_screen for ~ 30 seconds
3) stable display thereafter: NV_280.13 driver @ 1920x1200 & vidcard running legacy value of 60-C

Very disconcerting considering Hanns-G 28" bad reputation for early death ( mine has been perfect for 3.5 years ).

Though never looking before, I checked X-ORG log and observe an apparent display "checking" anomaly for screen resolution: I have not copied the entire log --- just near the end --- but similar entries for all screen resolutions appear at earlier stages.

Note that X.org finally settles on the proper 1930x1200 resolution. I'm way over my head in this issue gents. Is my Hanns-G monitor about to give-up-the-ghost or is something in the boot-sequence flummuzing the display? Any comments appreciated.

If it is perfectly stable after getting finished loading, Chances are you are dealing with a software issue(maybe the hand-off from bios to Linux to the video drivers, 30 seconds seems a bit long, but stranger things have happened).

Maybe you can grab a live DVD/CD and see if it does it on that? Honestly sounds like software. My bet is hardware would have the same issue once you are loaded as well.

NM:

Greatly appreciate your comments pointing toward a software issue. The mobo BIOS is the original V_1.4 ; I have stayed current with Ubuntu updates for U_10.04LTS including updated kernel etcetc that surprisingly have come-down since the April-15 **drop dead** support date.

The attention-catching behaviors are for me:

1) during boot the MSI mobo "splash screen" comes up on-time and without a quiver.

2) After the disturbing ~30 seconds of on/off blackscreen flashing while Ubuntu ticks thru intros, the display then becomes rock-solid for as long as I run the system.

Certainly doesn't act like a (heat sensitive) hardware fault. Will you advise a "test" I might perform to more certainly nail the **software** malefactor ? Alas BIOS flashing is beyond my current risk tolerance.
