ive been helping my grandfather migrate from vista to windows 8 in order to breath a little life into his old laptop, sadly hoever it doesnt seem to be detecting the display adapter and lists two items in the device manager, unknown mass storage device (i assume thats his BD drive) and unknown device. he uses an old vaio, mdel number vgn-ar51m.

the official nvidia drivers do not work; it cant detect the hardware. we can however get the sceen to display at its native resolution (WXGA+) so if we cant get the hardware working properly it is at least usable for him, if slightly slower.

anyone have any ideas how we might be able to get this working for him? google has thus far proved useless in helping me sort this out.

the mass storage device is more likely to be a card reader or some sort - I had this issues when I changed my vaio from a HDD to SSD.

Driver for mobile graphics chip sets often have drivers produced by the laptop manufacturer rather than the chip manufacturer

the following link is for the graphics drivers from Sony themselves, but only list "XP" / "Vista and "Windows 7"

not all Windows 7 drivers will work, but you have nothing to loose by giving it a try
