I have a 300w psu with a fan at the back pointing out. I'm thinking of replacing with maybe a 500w, but I notice a lot of these have the fans pointing inwards, this would mean heat from the psu would be blowing down onto my graphics card fan which doesn't sound good. So, do I just need to buy a PSU with the fan at the back pointing out like my original, or will the other type be OK?

All psu fans will exhaust air.
The ones you see are actually drawing case air into the psu and sending it out the back.
The stronger units are able to use larger and quieter fans with that orientation.

A standard ATX psu will be about 150mm wide, and 80mm tall. It will extend 140 to 180mm deep into the case.
Measure your current space to be certain that a CX500M will fit. It likely will, it is 160mm long.

I might guess you are looking at a new graphics card. What are you considering?

Its actually a suspect psu fail replacement...I keep getting intermittent power up problems. I've replaced my HDD but it still does it from time to time, and one of the fans makes quite a noise on power up. What happens sometimes (Not all the time) I start my computer, the fans race away as they normally do on start up, and then when working correctly, they usually then slow and I enter the boot process. However when I get the problem, the PC powers, the fans race but don't stop, and the computer doesn't make it to boot or even bios screen, and now power signal reaches the monitor and so the monitor goes into standbye. Sometimes it will boot and go to windows, and then hang while in operation so no keyboard or mouse functions work. I haven't yet tested the PSU, but I thought the noisy fan may be coming from the PSU, so thought I would change it and also upgrade so I can indeed in the future add a better graphics card.

OK I ran a test on my PSU..with a multimeter and all voltages from all connecters are within specs, but on starting it sounds like a bad bearing in the fan of the psu and it delays 10 to 15 seconds and runs at high speed then booted and the fan slowed down. Could perhaps a faulty or warn PSU fan cause booting issues. When it starts the fan has to run very fast and its at this point where he problem seems to occur. Sometimes it just runs at hight speed for ever with noise and wont get to the bios or boot screen, and another time it will seem to get past and boot fine. Scratching my head a bit over this. Any ideas?
