Old small form factor Compaq Evo with 1.8 Pentium 4. It goes to a plasma table of my neighbor's. He has to use this antique machine. I got a Startech bi- directional ide/sata adapter and a Seagate hard drive. I went ahead and got a 6gb/s hd, in case he ever needs it or upgrades. I also put an ide dvd player in it to re[place the cd player. I actually loaded win 7 on it with the hard drive on primary slot last time. Its all hooked in. The two switches on the adapter are on primary(tried cable select) and the drive is on primary. I actually tried it both ways. I CANT GET IT TO RECOGNIZE THE SEAGATE BARRACUDA IN BIOS. I am now trying xp with the driver from hp site. I know this is a hard question, but any ideas? I was thinking maybe a cloning program. The ide drive still has Win 7 on it, but it is real old. WHAT ABOUT THE PINS ON THE HD? I don't even know where to put one for slave or master. I don't know how to get the drivers off the old drive and load them pre os either. The ide drive has DriverMax on it. What to do, What to do? I need to use this hard drive, since I had him order it. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas, info, etc.

Nope, I've had 400GB drives in those. My guess is that it's the ATA/SATA adapter, I haven't had anything but trouble with them. The OP's best bet is to locate an ATA drive of appropriate size and forget about trying to use an adapter.

IDE controller to SATA hard drive
1. Set the DIP switches on the adapter to Master both switches under the yellow SATA connector to the left position.

2. Plug the 40-pin female IDE connector on the adapter directly into the
male 40-pin IDE connector on your motherboard.

3. Connect a 7-pin SATA cable from the black “To Drive” connector to the
connector on the SATA hard drive.

4. Connect the SATA power from the computer power supply to the SATA
hard drive.

5. Connect an SP4 floppy power connector from the computer power
supply to the SP4 connector on the adapter. If one is not available use
the included LP4 to SP4 adapter cable to connect one of the LP4 molex
connectors from the power supply.

If that does not work, buy a NEW drive (IDE) form ebay, and RMA/return that IDE to SATA converter
