I have a i5 3570k and I'm just wondering if I decide to OC to say 4.5 ghz will my CPU automatically go up to 4.5ghz right away or this just lets it go up that high if it needs to?

Same for GPU If I OC it will it auto go to that amount or only if it needs to use that much?

Any manual overclock will stick, and stay active during the entire time the pc is running no matter what you are doing. Many cpus have turbo mode where they rev up when the extra speed is needed but this is a bios feature and not considered an overclock. So basically, no the cpu and gpu will not automatically scale with what you are doing, once overclocked they will always run at that speed unless the settings are changed again. hope this helps :)

Keep in mind using power saving features with a bios overclock will in almost all cases make your system unstable during heavy load times.

Awsome thx! That's a bit undortineteas I've heard OC shortens the lifespan of CPUs and i was hoping it would auto adjust so its not constantly going so high. And yeah I believe my CPU has a boost up to 3.8ghz

Is it true that OC shortens lifespan of CPU/GPUs if there stable?
And last for applying the thermal paste should I just do the pea drop method? Someone said to spread it around the entire top part but then alot of ppl said don't.

not saying you are wrong or trying to argue--but can only speak for myself and my setup

but my 2600k is at 5ghz and downclocks to 1600mhz on idle

my 7970 is at 1ghz and also downclocks till i run a game etc

no instability in full load--have run prime95 and furmark at the same time to test my new psu as the psu fan

doesnt spin until its necessary i just wanted to make sure it would actually spin

I'd suggest between a rice grain and pea sized amount, let the cooler do the spreading work though, just make sure the paste dab is centered. The cooler should evenly distribute it once fastened.

Also, yes if you are increasing voltage considerably you will increase temps and may experience some degradation. although if you attempt a moderate overclock and only increase your voltage slightly as well you will probably not notice the difference in the chips longevity, depending on when you may upgrade as well. All cpus have safe recommended voltages as well, never exceed those and try to stay a good amount below that number and you will be fine for long term use.

Oh, and yes Mcnumpty, very interesting, I know through my experience power saving has always been related with instability and v droop. All setups are different as well, your mobo will always make a massive difference for overclock-ability.
