Computer randomly switches to onboard video on boot

I've had this rig for over a year with no issues. I recently moved and when I got setup again I wasn't receiving a signal to my monitor. While troubleshooting, I switched my monitor to the motherboard graphics port and rebooted and I got a signal. I entered my bios and saw that pci- express was indeed selected for my graphics option. Eventually, after selecting onboard graphics in bios and booting up then restarting and reselecting pci-express in bios again, I can plug my monitor back into my video card I'm good to go. I assumed since this just started after a move maybe something came loose. I opened up the case and cleaned and reseated everything just to be safe. Now the issue resurfaces now and then and I can't figure out what the deal is. I can't provide exact specs at the moment as I'm posting on my phone from work, but I can provide them later if needed. The video card is an EVGA nvidia 580gtx and I believe the power supply is a 750 or 850 watt or so. Any ideas here?

Maybe your Lithium battery (which keeps BIOS settings during power outages or power cord disconnections) is dead. Try to replace it.

I can give it a shot, though like I said, the setting in bios remains on pci-express even when my monitor will only respond when plugged into the motherboard. I've manually switched the setting in bios to onboard back to pci-express to get things working again, and even then, it sometimes takes a few attempts to get it to work.

Do you only have one PCIe slot? If you have a second try using it and see if you can get a signal (this is only for troubleshooting since your second PCIe probably won't be as fast as your primary). Otherwise try the card at a friend or try a old card if you have one lying around. The first you want to test is if it's the PCIe slot that is faulty or the graphic card. Then you can move on from there.

Also are you sure that everything is seated.. power connector as well? Menaing the 6/8 pin connector.

Are the fans running on the graphic card when you try to boot up?

I want to say the card is powered even when my computer defaults to onboard, but I'll have to confirm when I get home. I do have a second slot I could try, but I'll have to slide my PSU out to get my video card to fit. As its an intermittent issue, I'm a little worried about the results being skewed if the second slot appears to have fixed it. I'll give it a shot when I get home.

Did you ever fix your issue? I'm having this identical issue right now.
