Annoying whining sound?? HELP

I recently noticed this high pitched whining sound coming from my P.C.
it happens at random times, often when idle
I believe the sound is coming from the mobo/cpu area
how can i stop this?
the motherboard is asrock z77 extreme 4
do i need to return it? Ive had it for around a month

Are you sure the whine is not coming from your power supply or video card?

probably a fan of some kind. I noticed with my old 4870 that its fan would whine between 15-60% speed after a year or so of use. stick your ear near and try to isolate the noise.

if you can, disable pwm fan controll in bios and allow them to all spin up to 100% to see if it stops

Might also be a capacitor on the motherboard making a squeaking sound. My board does, and I too have a z77 extreme4. Its not loud enough for me to care however.

definatly not fan or psu, but i think it might be my graphics card
i have a sapphire 7950
is there any definite way to confirm if its the gpu?

Unplug the card and remove it from your pc then test it is the sound gone if so there your answer
