Should I get an APU?

Nope. Using a standalone Nvidia GPU means the graphics part of the AMD APU will be switched off. You may be better off with an Intel Ivybridge processor + Nvidia GPU.

The APU may be a good choice for modest gaming if you don't have or plan on getting a separate GPU.

I've got an AMD Phoneme II 720 BE, originally 2.8 quad core, but I've stably overclocked it to 3.2. I ask because a game called Planetside 2 is optimized horribly, and is quite taxing on the CPU, while my GPU does it's job well (overclocked stably as well). I want to either upgrade or overclock more. My temps never go above 45c, and 53 for the GPU. I've got a new larger case and 5 fans coming in the mail with a fan speed controller. Do you think I'll be able to overclock more with the lower temps those new parts bring?

EDIT
In addition, will a better clock improve FPS at higher res?

I know that the APU is FM2. I've been wanting to upgrade my motherboard as well, due to the fact I want more ram and SATA 3, not SATA 2.

It's AMD3+, so I could go with one of 6 different processors with it (only a 95w socket)

Max RAM is 8GB 1600.

I've lost the box for the mobo, soooo, I hope what I provided helps.

Sure, a stronger CPU will improve overall performance, including gaming FPS levels. OCing is one way to achieve this. Upgrading your hardware is another. If you are going to change out your mobo and CPU, you should consider getting the strongest system you can afford (not necessarily an AMD config). What is your upgrade budget?

For a mobo & CPU, around 200.
I want all SATA 3 and USB 3.

It would be more, but I've just spent 80 on a case, 4 fans, and fan controler I'd need in order to feel comfortable with more upgrades. My current case is a small metal box with 1 fan.
