HDD/SSDD choice in workstation build-out

Gents:

My Xeon build-out moves forward. Finding 4-pin sysfans seems to be an issue as well as quality front-panel port-kit. But, another 6-gig of Crucial ram arrives today.

Following the advise of AMD_Gurl & SPLay I am sticking with Ubuntu 12.04.x though a mass-storage issue does appear. **BTW** Toms HW just did a cover on SSD vs HDD behavior , concluding under the worst-case that a current mid_size SSD was heyond **many times** faster than the best HDD in practical use. No competition whatsoever!

But ... Linux does not currently treat SSDs very gently, with much configuration hocus-pocus to keep from eating them alive within **minutes haha**. Since the SSD ( say 120gig ) would carry my OS + proggies, a six-month-old 2.5" package of dead_flash would not make me happy. Especially since the OTHER extreme -- an enterprise class 1-T 7200 HDD -- lasts for 20 years (right?) and costs about the same ($135) as the SSD.

Yes a mass-storage balance point exists; my judgement of performance vs stability is divided. I'm asking fellow workstation users to weight options and opinion the most prudent long-term solution choice. Any comments appreciated.

Appreciate your post; quite an online selection. Yes I was really ignorant about case fans until I ran across the "magic" designator PWM (pulse width modulation) identifying 4-pin fans able to sense the motherboards control system. Have yet to find one in a local Jacksonville store.

Newegg or amazon or any online computer store will have a wide selection of 4 pin fans. Just look for the pmw option. Also any 3 pin fan will work in a 4 pin header without any problems. The only thing you lose is them pmw function from the motherboard.

Yes they are all-over ... except where I am ! I have got an education in PulseWidthModulation pinouts ... my MSI Z77A mobo has three (3) such ports and I figure to use one for a temp-sensitive case-fan. But even the systembuilders in JAX don't carry them .. primative ... anyrate can't **talk** to NEWEGG so I don't buy from them !! I ordered a NOCTURA from "Frozencpu.com".

REF// the 2nd issue I raised, a couple sys-builders did **trash** SSDs ... said they all broke in 2-years. Might as well get an enterprise-class 7200 1-T Seagate "Constellation" and never worry.

Gents:

Decision for build.out ... rejected SSD and pulled trigger on Seagate 7200 : 6.0G/s "Constellation" 1-T HDD. MicroCenter has them for $99. Now missing only no-frills front panel audio-kit.
