Gents:
My Xeon build-out moves forward. Finding 4-pin sysfans seems to be an issue as well as quality front-panel port-kit. But, another 6-gig of Crucial ram arrives today.
Following the advise of AMD_Gurl & SPLay I am sticking with Ubuntu 12.04.x though a mass-storage issue does appear. **BTW** Toms HW just did a cover on SSD vs HDD behavior , concluding under the worst-case that a current mid_size SSD was heyond **many times** faster than the best HDD in practical use. No competition whatsoever!
But ... Linux does not currently treat SSDs very gently, with much configuration hocus-pocus to keep from eating them alive within **minutes haha**. Since the SSD ( say 120gig ) would carry my OS + proggies, a six-month-old 2.5" package of dead_flash would not make me happy. Especially since the OTHER extreme -- an enterprise class 1-T 7200 HDD -- lasts for 20 years (right?) and costs about the same ($135) as the SSD.
Yes a mass-storage balance point exists; my judgement of performance vs stability is divided. I'm asking fellow workstation users to weight options and opinion the most prudent long-term solution choice. Any comments appreciated.
