I have noticed a lot of noise coming from my computer with a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB drive. I've read and listened on the internet to find something similar to this, but people seem to describe a "chirp" noise and I hear what is more like a metallic click. It always comes during or immediately after the drive is working.

Here is what it sounds like — the click is at 0:13, 0:19, 0:32, 0:38, 0:45, and 0:58. The big noise at the very end of the sound is not the hard drive:

The drive passes through checks of its S.M.A.R.T. status no problem. It is inside of an iMac so I haven't run Seatools. It has the AAK firmware and there is no upgrade as far as I can tell. Is this a problem? I understand that the drive is noisy when it is seeking data, but the clink noise kind of worries me. The computer is always responsive. The noise happens occasionally over the day.

Is the noise benign or should I contact the reseller the computer came from? I appreciate the input! Everything is backed-up.

Solution
That noise is from the seeking needle. It usually produces that kind of noise when the mechanical parts inside are misaligned or something of the like.

Unfortunately, I've never heard of a fix for that issue and most HDDs die after a while of having that problem; lucky ones become slow as hell.

I'd suggest about backing up your data and look for a new one.

Cheers!
