Hey guys. My home built PC acting up a little, every now and again my system will slow down for a few seconds the mouse will lag a little and the sound will stretch/distort. Anything from talking on Skype, watching a live stream, youtube videos, listening to music. I have tried and tested a number of things in order to fix it with no success. I am really starting to get annoyed with it and would like to find a solution before any real damage is done.

My machine specs are below in my sig; I have tried Malwarebytes, Anti-Malware, a number of cleaner and testing tools such as CCleaner, memtest.

I am currently running Windows 8 64bit, AVG is my antivirus.

I hope someone has an answer for me

Thank you, Sqoh.

Not really sure so we'll just have to stab at things until we can resolve the issue.

"talking on Skype, watching a live stream, youtube videos, listening to music", is that all at the same time or some of one and much of the other?
Assuming that your OS is installed on the 128gb SSD, you need to maintain at about 25% free space for optimim perfomance. Running multiple programs will chew up a lot of virutal space, it could be the reason your Pc gets really slow or actually shuts down, if it does that.

Don't have anti-virus scan at boot up, that will slow down the PC somewhat, it will still perform its background duties, there is nothing at boot up that would need to be virus checked. The boot up virus check would be heplful if you don't run periodic scans but otherwise, in my opinion, it's not worth the wait for desktop, your ram and virutal space would have data bits added to it therefore filling up crucial memory.

Some programs can cause such issues especially movie-making, programming, architecture softweare etc, they use a lot of cpu resources whereas PC gaming uses a lot of memory. Playing a Pc Game then going into yutube then having background music can cause the lag, better to reboot after a PC game to do your next task.

Windows 8, is that an upgrade versin or a clean install? If update, from what OS?

Do you use virtual drives like VMWARE or any other OSes , multi-boot system?

It's a matter of weadling out the obvious then moving to the less obvious then probably back to a bit of both ...

Hey TenPC, Thank you for your reply.

It could be anytime, I could be talking on Skype with a friend while playing a game and it could happen once through out the night, then again i could be sitting back watching a stream with only one tab open and it could happen once maybe twice, I haven't as yet been able to relate the issue with any specific program/game/website.

My SSD currently has 31GB free of 118GD. There are a few games installed on it but i like to keep free space as you mentioned.

I'm using AVG after disabling windows defender once someone said that's what was causing the problem which doesn't scan unless told to. I recently downloaded Malwarebytes-Anti Malware which again was recommended to me for scanning and again only scans when told to.

I haven't really got any heavy programs bar the likes of Photoshop, Dreamweaver, SQL server (which was just recently installed). All of which are student versions.

I find no slowing down problems while Alt-tabbing out of games to change songs, visit websites etc. Times when i have alt-tabbed it has been fast and smooth with 0 lag.

My Windows 8 was a clean install on a brand new SSD which I bought after building my PC. I use no virtual drives or duo boot OS's.

I have updated my BIOS, drivers, everything i can think of really :(

Thanks you, Sqoh.

Basically, your SSD is too low in volume, you can't be mutli-tasking, can't talk on Skype while playing a game and other things, you really don't have the virtual space to do multi-tasking tasks except music and internet. Even though you can do some things, other things will cause the lag.

Consider moving some files not in use to another hdd, like movies or pictures, uninstal programs that are past their trial date, or wnn't be used again.

Windows defender stopped being available after Vista so better to uninstall it. The only updates are for Vista OS.

Hi Sqoh!

As TenPc suggested, I'd also like to do a little stabbing. :D

This problem sometimes occurs when you have incompatible drivers. If you still have the CD driver for your motherboard, then we can try this remedy. I'd strongly suggest doing a system backup before starting with anything.

Uninstall your drivers, then reinstall them using the drivers that came with your mobo CD.

If that still does not work, try testing your ram by removing all sticks, then starting up with just one stick. Test your system if it still has the problem. Repeat with the rest of the sticks.

Good luck!

Hey Sqoh!

Sometimes, though not frequently, drivers that come on the CD are better than the ones found on the manufacturer's website. This happens only rarely though, but it's worth a shot. Just be sure that you back up your system first.

Yes, or preferrably, if you have an external hdd available, it would be better.
