Hey folks!
I've been wondering if you could help me with an issue with my gpu AMD RADEON HD XFX 6870.
Last days my gpu raised a temperature of 100°C, having the fan on 100 % speed, the gpu clock in 950 MHz, memory clock in 1050 MHz .It happened when I was playing to Starcraft II with the highest quality on graphics.
I have a V4 thermaltake case, with 4 fans set to 2000 rpm. Two of them intake the air, one is on the front of the case and the other is on one side of the case, very close to the GPU. The other two exhaust the air, one on the rear of the case and the other one on the top.
My mobo is ASUS PH877-M, and when the gpu raised 100°C, the cores varied
between 50°C.
When I played to mass effect 3, or dishonored, I had the fan on 50% speed and everything went well.
After the incident I tried to modify the GPU voltaje, with the Afterburner but it wouldn't let me change it. Then I tried with Trixx sapphire, and I experienced some flashes, but the GPU-Z didn't read any change on the voltage
My gpu is actually really new, and I have it pretty clean, but I havent
changed the thermal paste yet.
Any idea how to fix it? I guess changing the thermal paste would drop 5
degrees top, so I thought on water cooling, but what it really shocks me is how the temperature raised playing Starcraft.
My core is i5-3500 Ivy bridge and the temperature of the room is around
24° C

Thanks in advance, I appreciate any help.

it sounds like the card may have become faulty or the thermal compound / pad has failed or the temperature sensor is malfunctioning, i would check by hand, if it feels very hot to the touch then it could be the thermal compound has failed.

Are the GPU fans automatically increasing the fan speed? I had the same problem with my 6870 and I fixed it by simply enabling manually fan control and increasing the fan speed when i am gaming.

If the card is completly new, RMA it and get one of the current generation, if you have been using it for a while, lets say about 3 months, take apart the cooler, clean the fins and re aply thermal paste, watercooling its not that necessary... I support what Mauller07 said, touch it, if it is really hot, you may have a faulty card...

I did the same thing with the catalyst control, but still the temperature it´s too high.
