So I'm a college student on a pretty tight budget who's looking for a gaming desktop. I'm hoping to play modern games such as Skyrim and also record the gameplay while doing so. I don't have a preference as to whether or not I purchase one or build my own (though actually, building it myself might be a fun experience). I'm slightly computer literate, but not overly so. I think the most I could spend would be $750, though I might be able to push it to $1000 or less, but no more than that. I need all the processing equipment as well as a monitor and other accessories. If you could help me out, that would be awesome!

If you have $20 more you can reach to a Sapphire 7950 but the performance difference is marginal.

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor ($236.11 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock B75 PRO3-M Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($76.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($47.20 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($67.97 @ Outlet PC)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB Video Card ($276.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: NZXT Gamma Classic (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($29.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: Corsair Builder 500W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply ($44.99 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.98 @ Outlet PC)
Monitor: Asus VE247H 23.6" Monitor ($134.99 @ Newegg)
Keyboard: Logitech K400 Wireless Slim Keyboard w/Touchpad ($34.99 @ Amazon)
Mouse: Logitech 910-000806 Wired Trackball ($22.59 @ Amazon)
Total: $990.77
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Got the Xeon to help with the recording, the hyperthreading really kicks in when recording and not so much gaming alone, as long as you are doing both hand in hand it should be great! Also you should be able to process these videos on this machine without to much of a problem.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out, first of all!

I am slightly concerned about the price of all of this. Do you know of any parts on which I could "cut corners", so to speak, but still have a pretty good machine on my hands? Or rather, which parts of this compilation are most essential to recording and playing a game simultaneously? Again, thank you!

Get an i5 3550p, performs like an i5 but is slightly slower

4GB of RAM really is not recommended but it's workable

Getting a 7870XT would save you 30$ and grant similar performance

A 500GB HDD could be worked with but again, it;s less room

Otherwise that is about the limit of saving while keeping the same performance. This should get it below $900 without much trouble.
