Hello there
So i custom built a pc two years ago, my first one
its components iirc are as follows(going to open up pc to check names for some of these components after my current installation attemp finishes):
Nvidia gtx 550 ti video card
gigabyte (6 series/ultra durable?) intel motherboard
harddrive.. will check shortly
kingston ddr(3?) 2gb ram x1
i3 processor
oringinally running windows 7 ultimate 32bit

this computer ran amazing for the games i played for ~2 years up until about a month ago when my windows started saying it wasnt genuine. i ignored it because i had borrowed the boot disk from a friend.

Later on the boot ups would fail and windows would run startup repair. this was solving the problem, but the failed boot ups began to occur more frequently until one day my games began acting very strangly, hanging and loading partially. After a reboot i was unable to even get past the windows logo screen to the user account page.

i tried everything from system restore to safe mode boots, nothing would get me to the desktop. Did a memory diagnostic, it would reach 99% on part 2/2 then reboot, telling me i would see the report on my next log in (which i cant do). Chkdsk (from what i can tell) doesnt seem to find any errors, although i am quite novice at using the command prompt i will admit.

So i tried a clean install, got a new boot disk of windows 7 ultimate 32-bit. did a clean install, and now after ~20 hours of installation, i finally was able to make a windows account and log in, only to be walled at the welcome screen.

The overall windows installation process seemed to hang quite often and took (as mentioned above) nearly 20 hours just to finally be able to log in. Im going to let it sit a this welcome load screen for a bit longer, but im wondering what could be the malfunctioning hardware or what the problem could be?

i have been troubleshooting this myself as i am a broke college student so i cant really afford to take it in to somebody. any help is highly appreciated tytyty

p.s. sorry if this is a lengthier post than normal i am new to forums and fairly new to building/troubleshooting pcs

thanks i will try that now.

is it possible that my single 2gb stick of ram finally died? i hear these go bad a lot. i was doing some pretty heavy gaming on this pc.

i seemed to have reached the desktop after an eternity. things are still moving very very slowly. im going to see if i can do anything here as i am afraid to reboot with the new boot disk you mentioned. i will try hiren's if im unable to get anything but more hanging out of the desktop.

lol the recycle bin finally loaded.... its got to be my ram... would a faulty hard drive even let me get this far?

im attempting to run some of the hard drive utilities on this cd you linked me to. currently doing it from the desktop. the program keeps hanging and going unresponsive. i tried to run an error scan but nothing really happens. wheni check the health tab of the "hd tune - hard disk utility" everything comes up ask "ok"

im trying to navigate this program but theres hundreds of utilities in here, hard to know what does what.

every time i try to run a scan with one of them, the program goes unresponsive.

ok so i finally got one of the utilites to do a "smart?" scan of my HDD. It finished with many green lights but a few !'s, i can try to get a screenshot off my phone or something.

the !'s were next to "reallocation sector count" "reallocation event count" "current pending errors count" and "uncorrectable errors count"

no idea what this means though
